(5,957 posts)Fracking technology is responsible for the increased US output and a global economic slowdown is causing the lower demand for oil.
Should Obama take credit for those things?

(23,297 posts)You know they're selling cheap. China economy has flattened, India same, speculators are jumping ship.

(30,481 posts)Gas prices are punitively high and adversely effect the ability of lower income individuals to travel.

(21,786 posts)Carbon emissions from passenger vehicles are the number two source of greenhouse gases emitted in the USA. (Carbon from coal and natural-gas fired power plants is number one.)

(30,481 posts)Then low wage earners would also have to limit the area they work in to their local block or their shitty local bus route. And that vacation to the camping area two hundred miles away. Fuck that you poor suckers. Until us liberals have complete success you are just fucked. Wait it out and fill up your bike tires.

(21,786 posts)too many stupid and short-sighted people who are more concerned with low fuel prices in the near-term than the long-term consequences.
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)So the federal and local governments raise taxes by large margins on a gallon of fuel. Fuel sales slow because low income earners have been priced out. Due to lower sales, the major fuel companies also add to the price, keeping their profits the same. Traveling becomes a rich mans game.
You have clearly missed that part. Here is the next part you miss. No matter what the future holds in means of transportation it is going to take an enormous investment. The feds wont be bringing in an extra dime with their new raised fuel taxes because at your loved $8/gallon even those making $40 grand per year have been priced out. The feds take will remain the same. You have just priced out those with very limited say in society already and have given even more control to the wealthy.
Hey people with limited income, piss off. The beatings will continue. How about you not make decisions for those without. Your idea would do nothing but create an even larger class of people living in poverty. Hope the view is nice from your house.
If you read my post you would understand my concern is with low income earners. You are the one that is about fuel price, people be damned.

(21,786 posts)sooner or later. (Oil prices are likely to go up by some significant amount anyway once the fracking and shale oil boom plays out; the projections on that? around 2017.)
Better to get started on preparing for the inevitable now, really. (And last time I checked Americans constitute about 5% of the global population while using over 20% of the oil and one-fifth of all energy consumed; that can't go on forever.)
NCTraveler
(30,481 posts)At no point did anything I say go against that or did I even allude to it. Like you did putting words in my mouth the first time, you have tried to do so again. None of this can go on forever. That is common sense. It is still clear your thoughts are nothing but abusive towards those with limited incomes. Extremely abusive. Your plan would actually increase and extend the pain. It would keep the game for decades by lowering fuel consumption while creating an even larger class of those living in poverty. It would line the pockets of major companies while starving people to death. That is not hyperbole, it is the truth of your thoughts on this matter.

(21,786 posts)I'm sure that all the people in the South Pacific being flooded out of their homes because of rising sea levels will be very sad that Americans can no longer afford to drive 200 miles to go on holiday.

(55 posts)You do know that gasoline prices, regulated by the oil companies, go up every summer when demand is high (folks travelling on vacations, etc.) and go down again in the fall, when demand falls off. Has nothing to do with taxes or government action and everything to do with oil company marketing plans. Check the past several years, and the pattern becomes quite manifest.
