(32,704 posts)I won't be flying anywhere until there's at least 60 days of no new ebola cases.

(36,063 posts)I can't say anything about the ebola cases across the nation impact my life very closely.
BUT, that could certainly change. I'm in failing health, I go to public clinics regularly. I live within a half mile of a major midwestern medical school and regional medical complex--people who work there are my neighbors, they stand in checkout lines with me in EVERY retail shop I use. Some of them ride the same buses.

(114,904 posts)I'm not afraid of it personally. I am afraid of what it is happening in West Africa. It's a disaster of enormous proportion. The world didn't respond in time and still isn't responding in the way that experts say it needs to be. The prospect of a million cases in a few months is now more likely than not. This will impact the global community even if it remains largely confined to Africa, in a myriad of ways.

(7,107 posts)Airplane flights will be less crowded and probably cheaper.
The entertainment factor is high watching people getting scared or trying to scare others.
The conspiracy crowd has needed a new thing since the Mayan end of the world fizzle, so it'll be fun to see what they do with it.
Every sneeze with be met with wide eyed stares of fear and people quickly walking away. A nice way to advance your way through a long queue of people (Disney: Here I come)
Lots of money making opportunities for "Ebola Prevention Kits".
Bottom Line: No, not scared at all.

It may be killing thousands in West Africa, but at least you get more elbow room on the plane!
Great post!

(22,165 posts)I also realize that there is a very low potential for me to contract the disease.
The suffering in west Africa horrifies me ... does that count?

(8,492 posts)Being concerned is healthy. It keeps you from becoming a victim without turning you into a nut.
At this time, I'm concerned for the people that have come in contact with patients. I am not concerned for myself.

(26,582 posts)I'm not frightened, but it is worrisome that an educated person specifically told to not fly not only flew, but knew she had a fever when she did.
I don't live or work in Dallas, nor do I know anyone that works at Texas Presbyterian. I do have some friends that work at Alcon (where the boyfriend of the one nurse works).

(14,428 posts)Carry a woman dying of ebola to her apartment? Better jump in a plane to the US.
Been warned to look out for people exhibiting flu like symptoms from West Africa? Better half ass the forms when that exact thing happens.
Been exposed to the bodily fluids of a person known to have ebola? Better hop on a flight even though you have a fever.
This is what is going to get people killed.

(1,587 posts)Human error and stupidity are going to push this into an epidemic if something isn't done about the things like you mentioned. It may be hard to contract ebola, but you get enough people doing dumb shit and who really knows what the virus will do? It's the mutation, people.
I wouldn't say I'm scared, just aware. I haven't pulled out the plastic and duct tape yet.

(15,220 posts)Like people who get on planes knowing that they've been exposed to ebola and are running a temperature.
I would like to believe that self-monitoring and self-quarantine would be an option, but the latest incident makes me believe there are people who cannot be trusted to worry about others. If this nurse did as reported and boarded a plane knowing that she had a fever and had been treating Thomas Eric Duncan, I find that heartless. She not only had the potential to expose strangers in the airport, on the plane, etc., but she was exposing her own family members at the time of her departure.
She's a nurse for crying out loud. A nurse who had just witnessed an ebola patient die. What in the hell was this person thinking???!!!

(693 posts)near the places the nurses live. And I know many people who work at the hospital including people whose kids go to school with my kids.
I'm well educated and understand the chances of catching Ebola. But I will say, when it's very close to where you live and shop and your kids go to school, there's an anxiety level that doesn't seem all that irrational.

(19,841 posts)even though the odds are against it spreading widely. Being close to it you have got to be feeling apprehensive--only normal. This could happen anywhere in the US. There is cause for concern.

(32,060 posts)with an over-active immune system. Specifically I am more prone to infections due to meds I take for a chronic illness. I get my flu shot very early in the year and wash my hands a lot because my kids are still in school (cold and flu spreading grounds). I completely understand why you are a little nervous as well. You're right in the area and have no idea what the impact will be. That seems like a rational fear to me.

(5,043 posts)I do a lot of travel in Europe and Asia. Some places I go don't have great health care infrastructure. If it were to show up in India, for example, I would need to rethink a few trips I have on the schedule.
Plus I travel through Brussels and Frankfort, which are travel hubs from west Africa.
So, not concerned enough to curb my travel plans, but keeping an eye on the situation.
