World-Herald editorial: Pro-Lee Terry (R-NE) ads neglect the full story

Truth is often the first casualty of political advertising. But there’s a difference between picking selective facts to fit a campaign theme and using distortions to confuse voters.

Crime-related television commercials now being aired by U.S. Rep. Lee Terry and his Republican backers disappoint. By stooping to fear-mongering, they show disrespect for Nebraska voters.

Can’t a 16-year congressman and his supporters run on his accomplishments? Can’t they tell us reasons why he deserves our votes?

The two tasteless commercials that hit the airwaves in recent days, one by Terry and one by the National Republican Congressional Committee, should be withdrawn. The ads twist a legitimate and complex debate over public policy into Washington-style mudslinging at its worst.
