This is a Public Service Announcement ...

Last edited Tue Nov 4, 2014, 06:08 PM - Edit history (1)

On the occasion of this very important election, 1SBM has acquired a fine Bunnahabhain 18 year Single Malt Scotch for his enjoyment during his election return watch night.

As such, in recognition of the potentially explosive combination of Bunnahabhain and foxnews (1SBM will be channel surfing), and in full acknowledgement of the adage, "the drunken tongue speaks the sober truth", 1SBM wishes to extend a sincere and heartfelt apology, in advance, for any comment said, implied, or inferred, between the hours of 6:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. (MST), 11/04 - 11/05.

Thank you for your patience and understanding indulgence.

I sample a new and different bottle each month (for the last 3 years). I do 2 or 3 pours, then cap it for later enjoyment (if I like it) or give it away to an equally snobbish, though rightwing, tea party, conservative, Scotch drinking friend. The only time we're not arguing is when we're on the golf course and turning them up.

I've played up a guitar and can do simple cords and stuff. I played the piano many, many years ago. I played by ear. In my second year of lessons, Mr. Thompson, rapped my knuckles with a ruler when he discovered I wasn't playing what was written, but rather, playing what I heard ... that ended my piano playing career, except to teach BabyGirl 1SBM some really simple stuff (she has a great ear, too). I've promised myself that the day I retire (3 years, 352 days), I will sign in for lessons again.

As for golf ... I love the game that hates me.

I found bunnybean to be smoother, not as much flavour.

Laga was my fave single malt too, until I discovered Caol Ila. The 25 year old is amazing, but too darn pricey.

I had an 18 year old Laphroig a while back that was really good - a lot smoother than the 10 year old which is a bit harsh for my taste. Oban is my current favorite - very rich with almost floral qualities to it, but not as smokey and peaty as the Islay malts.

The Caol Ila gets stronger and peatier with age. And more expensive, of course. The 12 is actually fairly smooth, the 18 deeper and more complex, and the 25 really does deserve the 'dead bodies and seaweed' description

Because according to my watch from 6pm on 11/3 to 6am on 11/4 ended a little over 8.5 hours ago in MST.

Mrs. 1SBM hated Scotch ... just hated it ... until I had her try, just try some, JW Green Label, at a party ... I "made her" sip it straight. She was used to that rot gut people used to put in milk.

But this is my first time with Bunnahabhain! I hope she is gentle with me!

I had it for the first time a few decades back while at a hotel in the Highlands while on a structural geology field trip. One of the two professors leading the class had a small child, and she'd be climbing up and down cliffs with this carrypak with the kid or sitting on the edge of a cliff breastfeeding. I spent an amazing amount on airmail that trip, mailing rocks from all over Scotland back home. Fun times, after the class was over, I hit Edinburgh for a few days, and spent a week or two down in York. Went to 'Whitsuntide' services at York Minster, looked into the graduate programs at the university there, but didn't decide to stay on.

Love a good single malt, the smokier, the better.

Sadly, I am on fixed income, SocSec and no pension. So I drink cheap scotch, cheap martinis, cheap wine, and occasionally a bottle or two of good beer.

But I'll gladly raise a glass with you tonight, my friend.

Skäl!

the returns tonight, and definitely won't be watching any media coverage, especially on MSNBC. Instead, I plan to get in a good 6-mile run, do a little yoga, then open up a nice bottle of Zin I got from the Justin vineyards when I visited Santa Barbara a few years ago. Surely it has aged quite nicely!

Enjoy yourself tonight! You've earned it.

I don't drink alcohol and I don't play golf, but on this day we are united.

Pardon the threadjacking, but, speaking of golf: I can understand the challenge of playing it, even though it's not my game, but what I can't understand is watching it on television. It must be just about the worst spectator sport ever invented. Do you, as a golfer, watch it? If so, can you explain the appeal?

Straight up. Cheap but effective. Had a very short drinking career of less than two years and quit.

Haven't had imported Scotch since the sixties. Had it straight up as well. An expensive gift to my dad from a friend, that he never drank and sat on a shelf for years. After he died, I did.

Screw the elections.
