"I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Republican," he says

I'm working the polls at an elementary school. It's a half-hour before the afternoon rush, when the street lines with cars full of parents picking up their kids

"Can I offer you a list of progressive candidates?" I ask again and again

Almost everybody takes the endorsement list; and many smile and wave later as they leave

One man stops on his way out for a lengthy rant. "I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Republican," he says. "And I only voted for Democrats today"

I sympathize that I used to vote candidate-by-candidate and sometimes used to vote for some Republicans but didn't feel comfortable doing that anymore

He thinks that would be the right way to vote, if he felt he could, but he thinks the Republicans are crazy. He's unhappy today that the Republicans in control of the capitol here eliminated straight-ticket voting

"I'm never voting for a Republican again" he tells me

I thank him for voting. "You should thank people for voting DEMOCRATIC," he replies

him to vote for Democrats instead of just sitting out elections. Also we need them to start standing up to the lunatic fanatics in their party. So at least if a Republican has to win, it will be at least a partially sane one and we all won't get forced to ride the train to crazy town with them.
