General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThis - now, tonight, what we are doing - THIS is a big reason I love DU
This big, virtual room, hundreds of us all over the place, finding info, posting links, ranting and raving and sharing.
It can get loud and messy and we have different ways at coming at issues, different views on some thing (or many).
But we are Democrats, and we know what's best (and worst) for the country. We care - and we share.
And to Skinner, EarlG and elad
Be sure no one trips over the plug tonight - and put in the heavy duty breakers!

(42,770 posts)bickering. Tonight, we are one.
My huge complaint is why we let the right define that everything Obama has done is a failure. Most candidates co-opted this by remaining silent. The press does not challenge - the truly good things that have happened. Grrrrrrrrr.
I say this every election - and I will say it again
DEMOCRATS NEED A F#$%# PR AGENCY

(12 posts)As I watched the returns come in tonight, I thought about all of the outright lies that were told to different media sources, most of which went unchallenged by the press. If we as Americans have any hope of making this country a better place for our children and grandchildren, we can't allow this to continue to happen.
In the 2012 election, Mitt Romney lied over and over again, but it was not the media who called him out on it. Amazingly, Chrysler did in Ohio. I have never seen an American corporation respond like that.
Years ago, the American government gave away our airwaves to for-profit corporations, the only caveat was that they were required to report the news. Since they don't do that anymore, perhaps it's time for a renegotiation of that sweetheart deal. They certainly don't seem to be living up to their end of the deal.
The winners of this election, other than the Republicans, were the media corporations. They were paid billions of dollars to run advertising that was not truthful. If I could find one thing that would change the way that this country is run, it would be to change the way that our "press" are allowed to cover the news and politicians.
The folks over at Fox News were involved in a lawsuit several years back, and they won it. What they got was a clear signal from the judiciary that it was okay and legal for them to lie whenever they pleased. That is not a free press. It is no great surprise to me that the national and local news have skewed the truth to increase their own bottom line. I would say good place to start to repair our broken democracy is to reinstate the fairness doctrine. Another idea might be to limit the amount of sources any media corporation could own in a local area. It is no surprise that when one turns on the nightly news each and every network reports the same tired drivel almost verbatim.
That's my two cents on how to begin to repair our country. Everytime I hear a right-winger say that they want their country back, I think to myself that I would like my country back as well. I don't want my country back in some demented Leave It to Beaver 1950's fantasy, I want my country back in the way operated for most of its existence, with the press actually searching for the truth.
Words cannot describe my disappointment in the Democratic base for not turning out, in the candidates for running away from the president and from their accomplishments of the last 6 years, and for the media's complicity in fostering the false narratives of the GOP. It's time to fix this, my fellow Americans.
God bless the United States of America!

(7,549 posts)My sister keeps telling me will survive this no matter what but I don't think she truly understands how crazy and dangerous the Tea Party right is. I do have an appointment with my psychiatrist tomorrow. She's a smart lady and she picked the date on purpose. She knew I would probably need extra support tomorrow.

(11,841 posts)No matter what, the GOP cant say there was a landslide shift to the right. Everythings pretty close. And it wont matter anyway. If they win, they'll bicker amongst themselves and do nothing. Dont worry about it.

(15,100 posts)but with the senate in red hands, they will move to impeach the president. I'm just sick about this. All those LUNATIC men and women who are now in positions of great power are going to royally screw the American people. We women might as well go barefoot and get pregnant, because that's all that's left for us.
I know I'll get up again one morning soon and get back on the horse, but tonight I'm thoroughly demoralized.

(9,426 posts)The Democratic side has almost two years to see what is wrong with the votingmachines How could McConnell, who had to PAY people to pretend to support him, win? Crist was way ahead in the pols, yet lost Forida? Wisconsin's Walker is a dud, yet won re-election as gov? Rauner, who is Romney light, won governorship of Illinois? Something smells wrong, very wrong here. Koch money was put to good use for the repubs, the only question is HOW? The Not-So-Supreme Court should be disbanded, they are useless in helping working class people. I am devastated.
