People are actually voting for people who will fight against wage increases, medicare, social security, healthcare, pensions, women's rights, help for the elderly, affordable housing, financial aid, better education, human and civil rights for all, food stamps, better infrastructure, helping the poor and the homeless, the sick, etc.
Something is fucking wrong with our country.

(7,866 posts)...Arkansas and Nebraska, I think, that voted to increase their state minimum wage, while at the same time voting for Republican Senators that would do away with it if they could.

I know plenty of otherwise reasonable people who believe the following:
"fight against wage increases" - That's necessary because increasing the minimum wage kills small businesses. In fact, think of how many people we could employ if we liberated businesses from the minimum wage.
"medicare, social security, healthcare" - Socialist, unsustainable, job-killing programs. We could achieve much more if we based our safety net on private (read: Christian) charities.
"pensions" - union boondoggles
"women's rights" - murder
"help for the elderly" - you can help them by privatizing social security and giving them the freedom to invest themselves, instead of relying on the government.
"affordable housing...food stamps...helping the poor and the homeless" - aid for the inner-city moochers who won't help themselves and are coddled because it traps them into voting Democratic. No one ever benefits from those programs except "those people."
"civil rights for all" - Trampling on Christian religious liberty.

(86,612 posts)the announced results. I think there has been a bit of "rigging" beyond the stuff we know about. I don't buy into the idea that there are that many bigots voting against the "black guy" not on the ballot.
I think we have become accustomed to election rigging and miss a lot of the behind the scenes activities and what we do know about are the most blatant acts. It seems we only find out about those things after it's too late.

(5,909 posts)Add racism and you've got a trifecta that's always going to be hard to beat.
I don't buy into Dems don't give people enough reason to vote for them.
They can do a shitload better for sure no doubt about it, but I know relatives and friends that vary from GEDS to PhDs yet when it comes to politics they all sound the same.
One relative by marriage with a MBA votes republican for 2 reasons:
1) He's sick of taxes going to "welfare people"
2) Democrats are wimps (he's an ex-marine)
You can throw facts in his face, show stats on paper...doesn't matter. Yet he's 100% pro-choice, pro-LGTG, not religious.
