And there's plenty of clean air to breathe.
As far as I'm concerned, I live in paradise and no ONE man is going to be able to change that.
The election isn't going to effect my day to day existence. I'm single, I have free health care through the VA, and I have marketable skills that I can use anywhere in the world. If it gets too shitty, I'll just pack my stuff and move.

Teachers who are dealing with an administration that is fucking clueless about education and who lack the basic needs day to day to teach our kids?

Maybe you are in paradise. But millions of Floridians are being FUCKED day by day from the right wing Nazis runnign this state. Go post on FreeRepublic.

Yes, Florida has its issues with education and corruption and everything else you mentioned. But it's the same way everywhere else I have lived in this country. I say this is paradise because I love the weather. No snow. No oppressive desert heat. etc.
If I was to leave Florida because its so corrupt or whatever, I'd have no place to go where it isn't corrupt and the roads are full of potholes and the inner cities are crime filled.
We make the best of our little part of the world by getting up off the couch. Not by screaming at the TV or ranting on the discussion boards. Instead of saying what our government needs to do I think we should look in the mirror and say,"What can I do to make my part of the world better for me and my neighbors?" It's one thing to scream at the ref and another to suit up and play the game.
I think Americans have had it good for so long that we have become complacent and have forgotten that we make the world we live in. For too long we have expected someone else to do the work for us.

A. Yes the weather in Florida is nice especially now through April. But I wasn't talking about Florida weather, I was talking about Florida living. (ALthough I would argue that July, August and September is fairly oppressive heat in S FLorida.)

B. Simply picking up and leaving is never a great option for anyone. But frankly speaking I could move to Boston, NYC, San Diego, San Francisco, Baltimore, etc. and it would be MUCH more liberal and progressive than here. (I've lived in three of the aformentioned places.) But with two kids, a decent job, my wife's job, etc. moving is a daunting task.

C. Ranting on a discussion board is FINE. Hell that's what it is here for. I see you have like 2,100 posts. That's 500 more than me. You obviously have spent some time discussing or pontificating on this blog/board. Maybe not ranting like I did in afit of anger the other night. But nonetheless you've spent considerable time on DU as I have.

D. I DO spend considerable time OFF MY COUCH trying to make the world a better place. I work in the entertainment world and bring smiles to thousands of people's faces on a daily basis. (Sorry I do not want to confide what I do or whom I work for.) My wife is a teacher and spends considerable time everyday, especially afterschool where she isn't being paid, working with hundreds of students each week. She leads two children's choirs at our church (non-paid) and every summer works with low-income children in our area for music education. I work 2 to 3 days per month at our local food shelter with my kids. Every December I spend considerable time traveling to retirement and nursing homes playing carols for the elederly. I could keep going.

E. Yes we make the world we line in. No doubt. But the policies that our politicians put into place can help or hinder those daily lives. The right likes to take away social programs making people more sick and hungry. The right likes to tell woman what they can and cannot do with their reproductive organs. The right likes to make sure that the wealthy get nice fat corporate welfare while the rest of us bust ass to make ends meet. The right likes to take away healthcare (ACA) and deny citizens basic needs. The right wants to take away our seniors social net (SSI) and would love to monetize by privatizing the whole program.

Hey, there's a whole corrupt subculture in Florida that no one wants to take on. It only seems to be getting stronger and stronger. It's a crooked way of life that can easily be challenged in Federal courts. Just takes time and money.

If we lose this one, hopefully it will piss off some powerful Dems and we'll start cleaning up this damn state.

I am surrounded by bigots in Florida who go around calling those they don't like cocksuckers. Now I can add you to the list of Florida bigots. By the way, you do know who your wonderful state put up against Scott, don't you? We also had a really good idea of what the results of the election were going to be. Only a small group of people with limited knowledge on politics were foolish enough to think that libertarian votes were going to break for Crist. We almost got our old Republican governor back. Sorry it didn't work out. This is what happens when a candidate is put forward by one party who actually represents the other party. The real Republican wins.

Now go off and call some other people you don't like cocksuckers. That is the Florida right-wing way.

I should have used Kochsuckers instead I guess.

Alex Sink couldn't beat Rick Scott, Charlie Crist couldn't beat Rick Scott. Probably no one could beat him. The State of Florida is always a midterm Gubernatorial election which means the 50+ white crowd votes while the young, black, and Hispanic voters do not as much. It's a bad rut frankly.

Let's get over the word wars and work toward the common gola of defeating these people. Or we can get stuck on word wars. Up to you.

Because I was very angry at your post above. Frankly the post was very conceited. Maybe you are 100% in a great spot here in the great Sunshine State. I'm happy you are single, have great VA Healthcare, and have marketable skills you can take anywhere.

But guess what...not everyone...matter of fact most people are not in your same situation. One man...the Governor...can make a huge difference in this state. Imagine the tens of thousands of teachers (I'm married to one and know dozens of them) who must deal with the most anti-education Governor in Florida history for another 4 years. Imagine the kids in this state that have to dealw ith one of the worst public school systems in the US and their futures. Imagine the thousands of gays in this state who would love to legally marry who will NOT in the next four years. The Governor put the kibosh on the super speed rail project...which will continue to be on hold now another 4 years.

You know personally I am also in a good position. I have a great job, good healthcare, a well fed and clothed family. But I am thinking of the millions who are not in my position in this state who can't simply pick up and move. This isn't a "redneck asshole" position. This is a position that we should all collectively have as progressives.

You should have seen the look on MY face when I read your post.

This was a devastating blow for Floridians. People talk about how Crist was a Republican so that makes him no better. Scott makes Crist look like the second coming of FDR. Education funding in this state is fucked for the next 4 years, if not longer. My sister graduated college so she could become a teacher. She makes more money bartending.

Police, firefighters, hell any union really, women, LGBT people, poor, homeless, elderly, you are all targets of Scott and that psycho Pam Bondi. Expanded healthcare, you can forget it. Marriage equality, they will fight all the way to the supreme court. Climate change (which will destroy southeast Florida), they won't even bother hearing about it let alone do anything to stop it.

I'm so sick of this shit down here. I live in a blue county but we're fucking slaves to the rest of this backwards ass fucking state. We haven't had a Democratic governor in 15 years, eventually it'll be 20.

While we do occasionally come across the typical southern redneck yahoo asswipe, I realize that I merely have to drive 3-4 hours north/northwest and I'm practically in another state. It's unreal.

What really kills me is, if weren't for Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade, Florida would be a wasteland. There wouldn't be any money in this state.
