A message from 2064 to my conservative grandfather

As I look outside today and see a country devastated by climate change with barren wastelands where crops used to grow and flooded sea coasts that used to be beautiful beaches are only putrid swamps now I read history books.

They tell of a time where forest covered mountain ranges once existed but now all I see are the deep ugly scars where mining crews ripped the earth open.

It says that once long ago the people living here were not meaningless serfs and drones that toil for 16 hours a day just to hope for enough food to live to see the next work day.
I guess once people at least had one day a week off even but of course now our few masters cant allow that.

There are pictures of the sky where it is blue and a bright sun can be seen.
Now only the haze of smoke hangs in the air.

I only have one question for you...was your hatred for a black man and the idea that we all should be equal 50 years ago really so important to you that you cursed me and all that now live with this desperation?

1. Judge Dredd's Cursed Earth As An Allegory

Those of us with a nodding acquaintance with comics and graphic novels know about the Cursed Earth from the Judge Dredd graphic novels. The cursed earth that the end-timers, greed-heads, and deniers are making for some of us to live in isn't going to be caused by a nuclear war, but it's likely to be caused by massive short-term climate change, changing sea levels, massive extinction, strip mining, and massive air and water pollution.

As the privileged few of our unhappy descendants pay through the nose for a taste of clean air and water at some high-end sanctum, they can savor the bitter irony that the American Right's hostility to pollution regulation, alternate fuels, and carbon emission taxes was driven by the idea that opposing such initiatives would be cheaper than "big government" regulation.

I'm a baby boomer. I would be appalled if I faced mandatory euthanasia by the time I reach my 80th birthday. But if the Millenials pass such legislation directed at my age cohort, I'd find it understandable even if I'd rather avoid it. After all, it was we baby boomers who scr3w3d them over.
