And In The Sanest State In The Country: Ds Sweep State Offices in California

Democrats suffered a staggering defeat nationally in the 2014 Midterm Elections, but in California, the party once again swept the state’s top offices.

Leading the way was incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown, who amassed more than 58 percent of the vote to defeat Republican opponent Neel Kashkari by about 17 percentage points — and more than 900,000 votes — to win an historic fourth term.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, the former mayor of San Francisco, also handily won reelection, beating beat GOP challenger Ron Nehring by nearly 12 percentage points.

Attorney General Kamala Harris was also reelected to a four-year-term on Tuesday night, getting 56 percent of the vote to defeat Republican Ronald Gold.

Democrats also won in the secretary of state, treasury, controller and insurance commissioner races.

California proved to be one of the lone bright spots for Democrats on Election Night. As sweeping victories allowed Republicans to gain control of the Senate and increase their majority in the House, the party once again failed to win a single statewide office in the Democratic stronghold.

A GOP candidate hasn’t been elected to a statewide office in California since 2006.

Passed cannabis legalization, picked up a couple "D" seats, Re-Elected Dem Gov for 4th term....Statewide Bi-Partisan Defeat of M90 .....WA State passed Background Checks....
The West Coast is the "Left Coast".
1982 was Oregons last GOP gov and the last time we had a GOP elected to the US Senate was 2002.
I applaud CA for Keeping the West Coast Progressive!
Congrats!

I wish Sandra Fluke would have won, but at least we'll still have sanity in this state. Any of you seniors out there want to make the move here, let me know. I've got a room for you. Gay and 420 friendly.

which is ok by me.
I think it must be the right wingers that are leaving. They are sold on the idea that taxes are too high here. To them "don't let the door hit you on the way out."

that what was good for minorities be they women, gays, African Americans, Hispanics or Asians is good for me because by osmosis what improves their lives improves mine. The more rights and freedoms other people have the more I have. An increase in a living wage lifts the floor under all wages etc.

In spite of a concerted effort by several media outlets to gin up a controversy over Gov. Kitzhaber's fiancée, dimwit conservative Dennis Richardson couldn't quite close the deal. Jeff Merkley, whose opponent Dr. Monica Wehby received similar kid-glove treatment from the popular media, also prevailed. All congressional seats were retained by the incumbents, although it appears that maybe it's time for the Democratically-controlled legislature to redraw the district map so that Republican fixture Greg Walden loses his safe seat (after all, if the redistricting sauce is good for Republicans ganders in Pennsylvania and Texas, isn't the same sauce good for Republican gooses in Oregon?).

There's even an outside chance that the GMO labeling ballot measure might pass. If not this year, then 2016.

Thanks to dear old Prop 13 , a two-thirds majority is required to (gasp!) raise taxes. Result: Repukes hold their breath until they turn purple, and the state doesn't have enough money, so vital services like Medi-Cal (Medicaid) get cut.

Then again, we briefly had two-thirds in both the Assembly and Senate after 2012, and did nothing with it.

And focuses on the less populated states that come in earlier in the day. The Senate cripples the West Coast where we are so massively under represented while the House hits us slightly as we are under represented there as well. It wasn't a great night for Dems but the West Coast returns which came in long after the nation went to bed demonstrates why the GOP works so hard to keep the rural-low population state districts. If we ever got our representation the national agenda would be vastly different.
