In anticipation of the potential shift, a group of Republicans and Democrats have begun discussions on possible areas of compromise, which in a Republican-controlled Senate could include deals on taxes, trade, energy and infrastructure.
Its time for us to stop politics and start legislatingthat is what we were hired to do, said Sen. Rob Portman , a Republican from the battleground state of Ohio.
Mr. Portman experienced his share of disappointment as a member of the supercommittee that tried and failed to negotiate an alternative to the budget cuts that were part of a 2011 deal to increase the federal governments debt limit.

The message from voters is clear: They want us to work together, Mr. Reid said in a statement. I look forward to working with Sen. McConnell to get things done for the middle class.
With Republicans achieving a near rout, some in the party started to get excited about the possibilities, especially because it would mark the first time where both chambers would be in GOP control under the Obama administration.

(4,876 posts)Bohner already said "now we will see who the party of no is". I hope he's right. We have the Veto pen and the 60 vote Cloture rule the Republicans love so much. We need to use them.

(13,305 posts)Surely Dems will use the fillibuster in the same ruthless way that the Republicans did, right?
And surely we don't have 6 craven, corporatist, cowardly Democrats in the Senate, who would vote to break a Dem backed fillibuster do we?
And surely even if we did, our steadfast and resolute Democratic president wouldn't sign such horrible legislation would he? He would definitely veto it wouldn't he?
