Nancy Pelosi announces run for minority leader

Nancy Pelosi has officially announced her intention to run for House minority leader for next Congress.

In a letter sent to House Democrats and members-elect on Wednesday, the California Democrats said she would campaign for the party’s top position to work on voting rights and economic issues.

“To succeed, we must inspire, educate and remove obstacles to participation. Only by changing our political environment and broadening the universe of the electorate can we build a strong sense of community and an economy that works for everyone,” Pelosi wrote. “This basic and even non-partisan challenge, which many of you told me you share, have convinced me to place my name in nomination for Leader when our Caucus meets.”

He is not only a long time member of Congress, but he is also a hero of the Civil Rights movement.

There are other options that I think would be a huge improvement over Pelosi as well, but I think Lewis would please a large number of Democrats of many different backgrounds.

He's got the temperament, he's had enough TV face time already to be an effective "speaker" (as in one who will be listened to, rather than the specific duties of the office of Speaker) nationally, he's very good at articulating positions.

My own guy, Jim Cooper, certainly has the temperament, but I don't really think that he has the "wrangling ability" to lasso votes that is really needed. If he did, he probably would have already at lest been a Whip by now. He's also one of the remaining "blue dogs," which is certainly less than ideal.

Someone above also said Keith Ellison. I would say that pretty much all of the first paragraph applies to him as well.

Nancy Pelosi: The Most Effective Speaker of the House in History

As Nancy Pelosi hands off the Speaker’s gavel to John Boehner today, she also hands him a tough act to follow. Despite insistent attempts to malign her during her four years as Speaker of the House, the California congresswoman turns out to have been arguably the most effective person in that post in U.S. history. And it’s not just rah-rah Democrats saying so.
