Dear Mrs. Romney,
Perhaps you can advise me. Since you have raised 5 boys, Im sure youll understand. One of the kids is sick again and I have no sick days left at work. In fact, my boss gave me a bad performance review and no raise this year because he said I obviously dont care that much about my job since Ive missed so many days and if I miss anymore he may have to replace me.Whenever my child gets sick, my boss reminds me how easily I can be replaced.
We dont have health insurance at my job, so, if my boy gets worse, Ill probably be at the ER most of the night tonight. Not for the first time, but thats ok, hell get care. Its tomorrow Im worried about.
As you know, regular day care will not take a sick child, so if I want to work when my child is sick, I have to pay for sick child day care, which costs as much as I make, and, as Im sure you know from personal experience, I still have to pay my regular day care, whether my child is there or out sick, so I actually lose money in order to work while hes sick. Its that or take a chance on losing my job entirely.
Should I take my child to the day care for sick kids and lose money and not have enough for my bills this month, so I can keep my job, or should I stay home with my sick child and hope that I dont get fired?
What did you do when this happened to you?
Sincerely, Just Another Mom

(18,133 posts)My advice to you would be to go to work and ask the cleaning lady if she would look after the poor little tike for the day. You could offer to give her a small bonus that is pennies on the dollar compared to what it costs for that, what did you call it? Sick day care?
What is that you say? You don't have a cleaning lady? Oh I'm sure my Rosa can provide you with a referral.
Oh you can't afford a cleaning lady?
Well then, my dear Another, my advice to you would be to suck it up, pay for that sick care thingy and go to work. You can't be left without the dignity of your work, Dearie.
Sincerly,
Anne Romney

(53,410 posts)That's what nannies are for. If you pay the day care people then obviously you can pay minimum wage to a nanny who can take care of your child while you choose to go to work. Otherwise maybe you should re-think your obsession with insisting on having a career. You know, stay at home moms are workers too.

(15,223 posts)As a single mom, daycare and the rules about sick children that accompanied it, were always a consideration.
This post puts things in perspective in a way I've not yet seen done with this subject. Recommended.

(13,141 posts)and I think it wouldn't take much for Mrs. Romney to get the point --
if it's not presented with vitriol. She probably just really truly has
no idea. I don't know if she's a nasty person or not as some people
say -- but she's got people's attention and is milking it, so it's really
an opportunity for education.

(4,079 posts)I know exactly what you mean. One time almost the same thing happened to me. It was a nightmare!
One of my boys' nannies called in sick one day and on the SAME DAY my chauffeur wrecked my new Cadi. He couldn't have wrecked the old one from last year...No! He had to go and wreck the new one! (Well, on the bright side, at least Mitt got to fire him.)
And then, as if that wasn't enough, I was fifteen minutes late for my spa treatment, and do you know what they did? They gave away my appointment! Over fifteen lousy minutes! I'm sure you know how frustrating that is. I mean, they were able to "squeeze me in" but don't you hate it when the mani- and pedi- girl acts like she's doing you this BIG favor when all she has to do is sit around and file and paint nails all day. What snobs!
Hope this helps! Good luck with your job thingy.
Ann
