Role of lame duck presidents in their final year

Will a Repuke congress make Obama look better or worse? Repukes ran away from the Chimp in 2008 and it didn't help them, Gore turned down Bill's help in 2000 and that might have might it (along with Nader) within stealing range, Poppy Bush wanted Raygun's help but only got it in the final weeks in the 88 election
