Donald Norcross on 1st Congressional District victory: 'We have to get America back to work'

State Sen. Donald Norcross celebrates his victory over Republican candidate Gary Cobb for a seat in the 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014. Norcross replaces U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews who resigned in February. (Tim Hawk | South Jersey Times)

South Jersey is sending a well-connected Democratic State Senator and union leader to represent the 1st Congressional District in Washington.

Sen. Donald Norcross (D-5 of Camden) prevailed over his Republican opponent Garry Cobb in the race to replace former U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews on Tuesday night, according to unofficial election results, and celebrated the win with hundreds of supporters packed into the Camden County Democratic Campaign Headquarters.

"It was a 100 percent positive campaign," Norcross said after making his way through crowd members eager to get photos taken with their newest Congressman. "It was about giving our vision and what we believe is best for our district."

Norcross actually won two elections on Tuesday night — to fill Andrews' unexpired term for the rest of this year, and a full two-year term that begins in January. He's expected to be sworn into office as early as next week, when the House is in session, either on Nov. 12 or Nov. 13.

A candidate who won by presenting his vision and not by attacking his opponent? And a union member? Wowza!
