At least he's been caught!
Did the Amber Lynn Coplin Murder Photos Sicken the Creeps of 4Chan?

Maybe even the craven mutts who prowl 4Chan looking for stolen celebrity nudes and revenge pics of ex-girlfriends were sickened by the images of a freshly murdered woman.

He clearly considered 4Chan creeps to be kindred soulsand perhaps himself as just someone who had taken the notion of women as objects a step furtheras he went on to say, Check the news for port orchard Washington in a few hours. Her son will be home from school soon. Hell find her, then call the cops. I just wanted to share the pics before they find me.
snip
The police and the paramedics found the mother beyond saving. Somebody had rifled through her purse and placed her drivers license beside her head, with a word scribbled across it.
DEAD.
More words were written on a picture that hung on a wall.
She killed me first.
A third message was on a window blind.
Bad News.
The same impulse that propelled the killer to scrawl on the picture and the license and the shade seems to have prompted him to take pictures of his own and post them on 4Chanfor an audience that he no doubt knew to be vast and seemingly imagined to be of a similar mind.

I hope this murder will cause that cesspool to be SHUT DOWN FOR GOOD!

(14,733 posts)If some random user of DU committed a murder and posted the pics here, would someone 'shut down' DU 'for good'?
Codeine
(25,586 posts)An individual committed a criminal act. He was not encouraged or aided by the jackasses who use that stupid board. There's zero justification for shutting down anything.

(14,733 posts)A bunch of bulletin boards on different topics under a single website. I think most of the boards are relatively SFW, on topics like gardening, origami, comic books, etc., but they also have a few distinctly NSFW boards such as the 'random' board, whose postings are mostly overrun by pornography, pictures of dead or dismembered humans or animals, and a lot of trolling for the sake of trolling. At least of late, they've gotten a lot of press for being one of the early sites (along with reddit, imgur, and a couple of others) on which the massive leak of stolen celebrity cell phone pics appeared, and then one of the places besides twitter that 'gamergate' seems to be happening. The main functional diferences from places like DU is that the vast majority of posts are 'anonymous', since posting doesn't require you to 'join' the site, and that (I think) only a limited number of posts stay available at a time, and older posts get shoved off into oblivion. I believe they were also the site where the Anonymous organization was spawned, as well as the 'brony' thing, which is something to do with guys who are really into My Little Pony.
I went over and looked around when they were in the news. Based on the postings, the membership ranges from folks who are fairly innocuous and there mainly to act like high schoolers to the truly mentally ill, who desperately need help, with a large helping of really angry folks. Obviusly this guy was on thr 'truly mentally ill' end of the spectrum.

There are both rules and moderators, with the rules changing depending on the forum.

(33,688 posts)The mods kept booting bronies off of 4chan years ago so they went and started their own sites (the biggest of which is Equestria Daily which has something near 600,000,000 page hits in less than four years - yes you read that right). Which are remarkably well self-policed. Trolls are shamed and ignored at which point most leave. Tombstonings do happen but not often.

The posters inhabiting that place will just take their activities elsewhere... like 8chan (yes, there is an 8chan),
or AnonIB.
If anything, at least they're out in the open where their deeds can be monitored.

(21,786 posts)it's an anonymous site. All posts show up as "Anonymous" (hence "Anonymous" for loose collective of techno-dissidents and Guy Fawkes aficionados). There have been serial killers who found victims through Craigslist, which is still in operation; the majority of 4chan posters, one suspects, aren't murderers. Close down 4chan and something else will spring up to take its place (either another similar anonymous forum or something on the so-called "deep web" that's only accessible via a Tor-enabled browser). And as distasteful as I may find much of 4chan to be I don't really think heavy-handed censorship of things one doesn't like is the answer (since it doesn't actually make them go away).
