(27,985 posts)If they start to gloat, I tell them that I would rather not talk about it with them because it impacts me and people that I love deeply and that it's not something I am able to joke about with them. They've learned and don't even try anymore, which is good. However, the dynamic at work could be different than that with friends.
Good luck and another
Your birthday?

(29,672 posts)Thank you for the suggestion. I'll kill me, but our group of women are worth keep it civil.

(27,985 posts)I would just really stress to them that you do value their friendship and don't want to end up with hard feelings over it. I am sure there a thousand other things you can talk about with them... gracefully change the subject.
You'll do fine.

(29,067 posts)since I, too, was sick about the election, and just couldn't stand being in the presence
of a repuke.

(29,718 posts)wow. That's big. I won't let them near me or give them my money. I can't think a repuke would even be a good doctor! Sorry if you love the guy, but I would never go back and I would let them know that at the desk.

(29,067 posts)Truth is, I AM seriously considering changing doctors. This person is female and she is "nice"
enough, but she is a repuke...I've tried making allowances because she's a small towner from upstate
New York and, you know, what can you expect and sicj, but then again, I'm starting to feel that
I should only support people with similar principles and values.
After all, why should I give her my democratic money when she claims the Affordable
Care Act has only ONE good provision, and then smiles patronizingly when I try talking to her,
claiming she "doesn't like to talk politics"...yeah, right.
This doctor claimed to have never even HEARD of the Citizen United Ruling
or the Koch Brothers, and when I wrote down the names of both and suggested
she google them, she agreed, but later admitted she never bothered to do even that.
You're right -- The more I'm writing here, the more determined I am to drop her
Let them PAY for wrecking the country with their smug, willful ignorance!

(29,718 posts)both ours and expecting other women to be that. I'm living in the south now and I have learned all about nice. The true word is phony. Smile sweetly with a drawl and sink the knife between the shoulder blades. I read that women slavers were more cruel than men. So, no matter where they are, don't support them. We only have our meager dollars and that's how we need to vote since money is now speech.
I'm very particular who touches me and repukes make my skin crawl. I'm so sickened by their foul breath that I'm going to get my ELS certificate and sell everything I own and explore the world before it's gone. I hear health care is better in other parts of the world; I'll let you know.

(2,062 posts)This is what I am doing to anyone who seems overly happy about the stomping we took Tuesday... Just look them in the eye and say..."ok, so lets take a look at where we are now.... unemployment at 5.9%, 60 months of job creation, 1/2 deficit gone, millions of people finally have health care". Then say to them..."Now lets write these figures down and let's see where we are, in Nov 2016".
I guarantee we will not be better off in 2 years.

(35,685 posts)How can we memorialize this?
We need monitoring and top-of-mind awareness on this. Graphs and charts as things go downhill would be helpful.

Tell them you think that the next public sector employees to lose their jobs should be the snowplow drivers (have a nice winter :wave
Remind them that the greatest NFL team in the history of the NFL is publically owned.

(9,385 posts)is too shocking to carry on as usual.
There's nothing positive about this, and pretending there is only lets the malicious nitwits who voted for it off the hook of their responsibility for it. I would remind them of that every day after this, and never let them forget that they are responsible for the damage this congress will do.

note: I'm not that big of a Hillary fan, but they hate her more than Obama.

(32,688 posts)I was talking to a right-wing-nut at work one day and telling him how I wished I could move to California.
He sneered and said he hated it because of people like Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer. I agreed and added Nixon and Reagan. He never, ever said anything political again to me.

(3,118 posts)There are some places where the discussion of politics isn't needed or desired. A birthday luncheon would be one of those places, IMO. I'd tell them as much should they attempt to bring politics into the conversation.
oldandhappy
(6,719 posts)And you are. We all want our friends to be happy. Maybe not at our expense! But an easy one-off.
Or, 'I hope this will work out for all of us.' With a tack on that I am using for those who have kids or grand kids in their twenties -- 'What kind of health insurance does Betty have? Will she be OK if the ACA is cancelled?'
And sometimes I say, 'I need to talk about the weather.' Usually they quickly change the topic of conversation.
Anyway, have a nice time, have a nice lunch, and try to relax. We will survive!
