Mississippi Group Wants An Official 'Confederate Heritage Month'
A Mississippi heritage group wants to establish a "Confederate Heritage Month" in April.
The group, the Magnolia State Heritage Campaign, is pushing a proposed 12-part ballot measure that includes providing a curriculum for school children to find out about "Mississippi's Confederate history, heritage, achievements, and prominent people, including Mississippi's African American and Native American veterans."
The measure also includes flying the Confederacy's battle flag on Mississippi state capitol grounds and requiring the Mississippi state flag pledge of allegiance be recited after the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance.
The effort has been endorsed by former Miss America and Mississippian Susan Akin as well as former state Rep. Mark DuVall (D). DuVall, the Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Mississippi noted, wanted to pass legislation during his time in office that would have let the University of Mississippi bring back Colonel Reb as its mascot.
