Friday Feminist Fuck Yeah: The feminist protest in Barcelona
Like the rest of the English-speaking world apparently, were late on covering the awesome feminist protest that happened in Barcelona last week. Called Vaga De Totes (Everything Strike), the protest brought together more than 600 different feminist and community groups.
The slogan of the day of struggle was Women move the world, together we will stop it, and one of the goals was to highlight how the labor strikes that Spain has seen in recent years dont take into account womens unpaid work outside of the formal waged economy. Protestors read a manifesto denouncing a devastating market system which undermines both social justice and gender equality, and signs proclaimed, Muerte al Patriarcado, Huelga de Cuidados, which translates to Death to the patriarchy, caretakers strike.
As the breastfeeding woman in the video above explains, We live in very productivist and capitalist societies in which whats really important isnt valuedwhich is that all of us have the minimum we need so we can take care if each other. There is labor primarily realized by women thats invisibilized, not recognized, and without which we could not survive.
The protest was a trial run for a true general strike planned for the spring of 2015a strike that wont just shut down waged work but all work, including the shopping, cooking, cleaning, child rearing, and caring for people that so often falls to women. Sounds like a good excuse for me to finally take that trip to Spain

(2,252 posts)1. Poder para las mujeres en Barcelona...
Barcelona is a woman's town, there are women everywhere
Barcelona is a woman's eyes, with raven gypsy hair
I got drunk in Barcelona and she walked away from me
My tears ran down a bottle of Spanish burgundy
And I drank until I slept and I slept until I dreamed
In every dream her lips did taste of Spanish burgundy
There was once a gypsy saying, it may come from Catalan
First the man he takes the drink, then the drink it takes the man
It may lead you to destruction or a love that's meant to be
Beware of Barcelona girls and Spanish Burgundy
And we drink until we sleep and we sleep until we dream
We dream of Barcelona girls and Spanish burgundy
So I will join the old men down in the sad cafe
The sun goes up the sun goes down, shadows cross our face
We sing of how it might of been and how it used to be
And the moon shines through the bottles of Spanish burgundy
And we drink until we sleep and we sleep until we dream
We dream of Barcelona girls and Spanish burgundy
And we drink until we sleep and we sleep until we dream
In every dream her lips did taste of Spanish burgundy
Power to you, Barcelona women!
