What if we find the Higgs particle? And what if we don't?

This World Leaders Forum program asks the question: "What if we find the Higgs particle? And what if we don't?" Columbia physicists and leading science journalists will discuss a potential development that could change our fundamental assumptions about the physical world: the possible experimental verification of the existence of the Higgs boson, a long hypothesized particle thought responsible for endowing other elementary particles with mass. The panel will include Michael Tuts, Columbia University Professor of Physics and U.S. ATLAS Operations Program Manager at the Large Hadron Collider at the CERN laboratory in Geneva; Brian Greene, Columbia University Professor of Physics and Mathematics; Dennis Overbye, The New York Times science reporter covering physics; and Mariette DiChristina, Editor-in-Chief of Scientific American.

It would be more interesting if they don't find the Higgs longship Apr 2012 #2

Online registration is required and currently open. This event will be broadcast live on the World Leaders Forum Live Stream page at 4:00 p.m. on April 18th.

Sounds interesting--I guess it would be nice to know why exactly they built that gigantic Hadron Collider.

That would mean new physics, which is always welcome. It also means that the theorists have work to do to correct the standard model which has withstood all attempts to break it for decades.

Regardless of the Higgs mechanism or not, the LHC will be working at energies where new physics will undoubtedly be found as they ramp up the LHC to its 14 TeV maximum.

Cool post. I don't have sufficient BW to stream so I hope somebody writes a summary.
