Democrats Surge in House Swing Districts
A new Democracy Corps survey in the 56 most-competitive Republican held congressional districts finds President Obama now edging Mitt Romney, 48% to 47%. In December, Obama trailed by seven points.
Key finding: "Democrats are winning the image battle, up and down the ticket. While half of the voters in these districts register cool feelings toward the Republican Party and Republican Congress, the Democratic Party has enjoyed an 8-point bump in favorability since September 2011, and Democrats in Congress have seen a 7-point rise."
Also interesting: "The Ryan budget is in trouble. Just 41% support it in these Republican districts with no description other than the fact that it cuts spending. When described, including using Ryan's own language, support collapses to 34%."

(129,391 posts)let some Democrats win in some of these Districts. The danger is getting a blue dog but at this point, we need to take the House back.

us with a mountain of sound bites that are worth their weight in gold.

(27,247 posts)In 2010, Arkansas went from having two Democratic US Senators and 3 of 4 Democratic representatives, to one (ostensibly) Democratic Senator and one (ostensibly) Democratic representative-- a net Republican gain of 3 Congressional seats in a state that only has 6 Congressional seats in total.

(28 posts)Equals no too little change, in fact many times they cause lots of problems with good legislation, see Stupak.
What is missing fromthe story is how many liberal and progressive dems are running.

(6,336 posts)Some of these "Blue Dogs" vote with the Democrats 85% of the time. I'd rather have a Blue Dog that votes with the Dems 85% of the time than a Repuke who votes with the Dems 0% of the time.
Some districts are simply not winnable by a liberal (I've worked in such districts before).

(292 posts)...in fact, I'd rather vote for ANY candidate who votes with their own conscience 100% of the time and couldn't care less what the corporate sponsors demand. It seems that both parties could use some alone time in a corner.

(31,239 posts)then you'd know that you're both woefully undereducated, or willfully ignorant when it comes to the workings of Congress. It's about "majorities". This is a great big tent where we welcome those from the very liberal, to the very conservative. It's the numbers that matter. The majority gets to chair very important committees. They then get to decide what comes out of that committee, and onto to the floor for a vote. I wouldn't trade that ability for all the ideological purity in the world.
I think everyone here would prefer a House full of Barbara Lee's, over the Heath Shuler's any day, but that's not the real world. Not every district in the country is a liberal hotbed. The folks who voted for the blue dogs are just as passionate, and deserve to have their voices represented.

(292 posts)I'd be more impressed if you just kicked sand at us. I'm here for civil discussion, and yes, to be informed. Not for hard line conformity or insult contests.
This is why 2010 was such a tragedy. Some of those districts are so conservative now we just won't ever get them back. Some people really need to face the facts that running as a Dem in rural Mississippi or Georgia isn't the same as one running in Los Angeles or NYC, which is why the Progressive Caucus only lost a handful of members in '10.

(59,504 posts)If we have the majority, we have the committee chairs. That means a huge amount - imagine the end of all the Issa hearings (and those of other chairs.) Imagine a House that writes a decent budget - and which ignores Ryan.

(46 posts)We've been under congressional republican control for many decades. Redistricting finally changed the boundaries, and we have a competitive distrct. I wil be glad to see Jerry Lewis go. Here is my favorite Democratic Candidate.. Pete Aguilar from Redlands Ca.
