Former Sgt. Shawn Glans is charged with one count of harassment and one count of official misconduct following an investigation prompted by a video of the encounter. The incident was recorded on a cellphone by someone who was with the suspect at the time.
Glans and two other deputies were responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle around 2am on Friday. When they arrived, the vehicle was gone but they quickly located it in the parking lot of the nearby Walmart in Halfmoon. Sgt. Glans reported seeing a gun in the backseat and then going inside the store to locate the registered owner of the car.

(111,261 posts)recording them. While the USSC has upheld our rights to video the cops, the cops are so out of control they refuse to read the memo.

(948 posts)We cannot have a real dialogue in this country until the police are disarmed of their guns and body armor.
Ideally, every single cop nationwide should be fired and replaced with peace advocates, trained in non violent interventions and equipped with only tazers, radios, and handcuffs. Lethal weapons would be stored at the station and brought out only for emergencies.

(948 posts)Or do you mean he takes a chunk from ALL the pensioners? That would be great if the pork pension fund was bankrupt for a year or two. A lot of problems would be internally corrected if every lawsuit resulted in every retiree from that agency losing their benefits for a year or two!

(3,891 posts)How many times has this Sergeant gotten away with this kind of behavior? How many times has he roughed someone up, and just done whatever he wanted to without any fear of reprisal? Not allowed to search? No problem, just do it anyway and swear that they gave you permission and who would question the cops?
Gotta love the wife though, he just made a bad decision. The thing is this, he was so comfortable doing so. Him cop, always right and the courts will back them up.
Kudos to the DA for filing charges so quickly. Apparently the DA has heard of an illegal search even if the cop hasn't.

(119 posts)What about charging the cop with assault or battery also for hitting the young man? What do you think would happen if we smacked a cop when we were angry and made a bad decision?
Also, what about the cops accomplice? The other cop that saw it all, yet stood by the dirtbag partner? Isn't he supposed to uphold the law also? Why isn't he charged with being an accessory or something?

(3,891 posts)I'm speaking to the larger issue, the culture that allows this sort of thing to go on, and on, and on. Now, with the prevalence of video cameras, we are getting a glimpse of the cultural norms of the police. The thin blue lie of silence if you will.
Remember Rodney King? One of the things that was interesting was that the police reports all said exactly the same thing, and all of the reports were untrue. I'm talking about the routine lie if you are not yet on the same page. A lie that all the police are taught to put down to justify their excessive force actions. In this case, the video not only exposed the action, but the lies.
So I wonder, how many times has he done something similar? How many times has he roughed up a "suspect" (an earlier threat objected to my use of the word suspect despite the routine use of the word by police) and nobody raised an eyebrow? I'd say quite often. Often enough that it was a reflexive action when someone disputed his authority to do whatever he wanted. I want to know how many times he's slapped someone, or just done whatever he wanted? How many people are right now serving time in Prison because of evidence seized during an illegal search? How many people have criminal records because of his actions?
I'm guessing quite a few, because again, he was so comfortable demanding something he had no legal right to, but took it upon himself to use the moral right. Me cop, you do what I say.
I'd link to my many other posts on this subject, but suffice to say, I've discussed the lack of charges for the other cops who all wrote reports that were also untrue many times.
