Major airline upsets passenger by losing his dog

http://fox4kc.com/2014/11/10/major-airline-upsets-passenger-by-losing-his-dog/

"According to 10 News in Tampa, Frank Ramano boarded a flight in Los Angeles which was destined for Florida on October 31. Ramano says Delta Airlines lost his dog, Ty, as he boarded the flight, and more than a week later, his beloved pet is still missing.

“To me it sounds like they don’t care. They sound like they lost a piece of baggage,” Ramano told 10 News. “No. He’s family. He’s like my best friend. He’s another part of our family.”

Ramano said he was homeless when he adopted 6-year-old Ty, and that in a way the dog had rescued him by helping him through such hard times.

Delta said their workers are still trying to find the pet after he chewed through his crate while in the cargo section of the plane, and then ran across the tarmac.

Ramano however, is skeptical and claims the airline has been giving him the run-around, saying they have changed their story many times. He says the airline offered him credit towards another flight, but stated that no amount of money will fix the situation."

The animal gets loose and runs off due to being in a terrifying environment.

Don't send your companion animals as cargo. Just don't.

Neighbor across the street with a leash in one hand was chasing his dog that got loose and got away. Another neighbor was also chasing the dog. I saw the dog running up and down the street (cul-de-sac) and I don't know if they ever caught it. Since I was never aware they had a dog, I'm thinking it was a new member of the family or they were dog-sitting for someone. Dog was faster than the people, of course. Our dog goes in our fenced back yard but if he is in the front, he is always on a leash with a harness (he can slip a collar).

When airlines offer the service of transporting an animal and are paid for the service, the least they can do is figure out how to keep the animal under control and safe. It may mean that the airline furnishes a crate that they know can't be damaged or opened by the animal.

it's possible the dog wasn't sedated enough before he was crated and got nervous and broke the crate, they also don't mention if it was a direct or connecting flight

Our dogs are our kids - only with fur and four paws. I wouldn't ship a relative air cargo and I won't ship my dogs either. Our four dogs have NEVER spent a night with both of us gone. We have traveled all over the country and they have gone with us, both in the car and in our RV.

I understand that YMMV, but that's how we roll.
