Forecast: Cold arctic air likely to make itself at home; roads slick

By Nancy Gaarder and Jay Withrow / World-Herald staff writers

UPDATE (5 a.m.)

— Omaha-area main roads, side streets, sidewalks and driveways very slick after an overnight storm, which blew in from the arctic and dumped up to a foot of snow on parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, left behind low temperatures, strong north-northwest winds and a thin layer of snow-ice-slush in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Dodge Street scraped and salted in most areas. However, Dodge Street near Happy Hollow Boulevard was extremely slick early today. Bridges and overpasses very icy.

— Road conditions elsewhere early today: Completely covered with snow in an extreme section of northwest Nebraska’s Panhandle; partially covered in the Panhandle and most of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha; normal driving conditions in central Nebraska and parts of southeast Nebraska. Western and north-central Iowa roads partially covered.

Snip: At least nine injury accidents occurred from 11:20 p.m. to midnight, and six of those occurred within 20 minutes.
The accidents occurred in west, north and South Omaha and three happened on the Interstate.

At about 12:30 a.m., a semi and pickup truck collision blocked Interstate 80 eastbound at L street. The semi became jackknifed and blocked all the eastbound lanes. Vehicles were redirected to the Giles and Harrison exit. I-80 was reopened about 3 a.m. today.
