Editing to share some memories from Osan AB, ROK, The Pentagon and The Philippines (R&R)

(12,157 posts)You know there are some who scoff at us who served in the U.S. Air Force-like were not real vets, but I am proud of my service in the Air Force, my son's and my grandson who is currently active.(he's been to Afghanistan twice and Korea once all in his first enlistment) My son just retired after 20 with a rank of E-8 Senior Master Sargent.
So what is that uniform? I had green fatigues, khaki 1505s and dress blues. What you are wearing looks like 1505s but in white.
P.S. got no pics, we moved too much in the early years of our marriage and somethings just disappeared. That makes me sad.

(73,631 posts)The pic was taken for the August 30 1991 issue of the AFDW Beam, the base newspaper for Bolling AFB and The Pentagon at the time.

(12,157 posts)It was a blue shirt to be worn with the slacks from the dress blues. I can't remember what they called that uniform. I wore out all my fatigues in civilian life as work clothes around the farm. My dress blues including hat got modified for my son for the play Guys and Dolls in which he played a Salvation Army man. I don't know what happened to them probably at the high school drama dept.

(12,157 posts)Both grandfathers served in the U.S. Marines in WW I, one served in the U.S. Navy in WW II and my Dad served in the U.S. Army in WW II landing on the beach at Normandy and meeting up with the Russians with Patton. He also served in the U.S. Army in Special Forces during the Vietnam era.
Regardless of what anyone says these 3 men that came before me are definitely heroes.

(4,835 posts)The military did more for me than I did for it. I was a carpentry/masonry specialist (MOS 96B I think). Built boxes (shipping crates) in Furth Germany for 3 years, then went to Fort Riley to finish up my 4 year enlistment. Joined the guard (tanks) and lived in Manhattan Kansas long enough to get a degree in engineering (16 years later).
I got to see the world, it helped me get a good education and it got me away from my little one horse town (which frankly, now that there is Facebook and I can see what they're up to) is the biggest asset that I got from serving.
The country doesn't owe me any debt of gratitude. I wish there was a program where one could learn skills that benefit people and then have them perform that skill, rather than training young people to kill.

(9,722 posts)Trained at Fort Devens as a ditty bopper. Was sent on "special assignment" to Senaca Army Depot in New York,cross-trained as a nuclear weapons specialist, to keep an "eye and ears" on the weapons and personnel there. Huge security clearance so no problem. Seemed quite cool, as an impressionable young man.
Sadly, in retrospect, not my better days.

I was in teletype repair. Signal School at Gordon, then a brief stint at Davis Station (I made rank out of school and DS didn't have room for another SP5 in my MOS, then 7th RRFS @ Udorn and back state side at 1st RRFS @ Vint Hill Farm
As they offered me choices of MOS, I was thinking "do something with computers...they won't put them where the bullets are flying. I didn't get computer repair, but I got data preparation set repair, spent my shifts "in the box" in air conditioned comfort surrounded by concrete walls and roof and was qualified to be a mortar crew member...fireworks as we said since our job was really just to provide illumination.

My Father and uncle retired from the Air force, the other older uncle was a POW in Germany, both of my Grandfathers served, one of them was 41 when he joined (WWII). What is odd is a lot of us ended up as Dems or left of that and union men as well. Have a good day Vets!

> What Is a Veteran?
A "Veteran" - whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to, and including his life."

Daddy has only recently begun to share his experiences or show any desire to remember his military experiences. He'll be going to remembrance services today in a Class A uniform with his patches and medals. (And I hope like heck I didn't get anything wrong on those!)
All my cousins, current and former military, especially my cousin Tanya who was in Beirut but made it home only to leave us far too soon. Heck, even my fundie ex-husband, who served in the Viet Nam war.

I managed to get the pictures to show up. See how I carried my machine gun. Upside down and the trigger is pulled by my little finger. This was done so the brass would land back in the ship instead of hitting our tail rotor.

I spent 8 more years as a reservist. Used the GI Bill to get my master's degree.
My husband's son and daughter-in-law are both in the AF as well. He is in the security police, and she is a nurse. Both are lieutenant colonels, and she pinned on first so she outranks him by several months. -
