* They sent some Phariseesd and Herodians to him to ensnare hime in his speech.* 14They came and said to him, Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyones opinion. You do not regard a persons status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay? 15Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at. 16They brought one to him and he said to them, Whose image and inscription is this? They replied to him, Caesars. 17So Jesus said to them, Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. They were utterly amazed at him.f
15d Then the Pharisees* went off and plotted how they might entrap him in speech. 16They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians,* saying, Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyones opinion, for you do not regard a persons status. 17* Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? 18Knowing their malice, Jesus said, Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? 19* Show me the coin that pays the census tax. Then they handed him the Roman coin. 20He said to them, Whose image is this and whose inscription? 21e They replied, Caesars.* At that he said to them, Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. 22When they heard this they were amazed, and leaving him they went away.
20* They watched him closely and sent agents pretending to be righteous who were to trap him in speech,l in order to hand him over to the authority and power of the governor. 21They posed this question to him, Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is correct, and you show no partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.m 22Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar or not?* 23Recognizing their craftiness he said to them, 24Show me a denarius;* whose image and name does it bear? They replied, Caesars. 25So he said to them, Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.n 26They were unable to trap him by something he might say before the people, and so amazed were they at his reply that they fell silent.
As to the obey the laws of the land that comes from Paul but I am unsure as to the citation.
This is one from Romans 13:1-7
1Let every person be subordinate to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God.a 2Therefore, whoever resists authority opposes what God has appointed, and those who oppose it will bring judgment upon themselves. 3For rulers are not a cause of fear to good conduct, but to evil.b Do you wish to have no fear of authority? Then do what is good and you will receive approval from it, 4for it is a servant of God for your good. But if you do evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword without purpose; it is the servant of God to inflict wrath on the evildoer.c 5Therefore, it is necessary to be subject not only because of the wrath but also because of conscience.d 6This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 7Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.e
