At an event celebrating veterans, its most certainly the appropriate place for the song.
In the meantime, Springsteen also performed Born in the U.S.A. last night, which didnt draw conservatives ire, and which is arguably a more explicit anti-war song.

(39,343 posts)And if the idea of an anti-war song makes you sick (not you, but your friend who is a Vet) I don't have any advice for you. I've friends and family who have served numerous trips to the Iraq & Afghanistan theaters and they are very anti-war. I have a friend who is still serving in theater today and hates these stupid conflicts. There's nothing more patriotic than hating the war you just got back from.

(12,482 posts)maybe anti Vietnam war post fact. But I have always thought it was mainly about America's neglect of veterans specifically and the general lack of economic options for the working class in post industrial rust belt America-a common Springsteen motif. But like you said its interpretation. I wasn't even aware of the controversy the op is about.

In 1968, the majority of the country thought morale was great among the troops, and eighty percent of them were in favor of the war. But to some of us who were watching closely, we just knew we were headed for trouble." '

I saw John Fogerty perform this a few weeks ago. It was a great concert.
