I think the first real change in womens body image came when JLo turned it butt-style. That was the first time that having a large-scale situation in the back was part of mainstream American beauty. Girls wanted butts now. Men were free to admit that they had always enjoyed them. And then, what felt like moments later, boomBeyoncé brought the leg meat. A back porch and thick muscular legs were now widely admired. And from that day forward, women embraced their diversity and realized that all shapes and sizes are beautiful.
Ah ha ha. No. Im totally messing with you. All Beyoncé and JLo have done is add to the laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful. Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes.

(12,296 posts)There's no way the ass with the champagne glass sitting on it in the photo is real.
Too 'square'.
As far as the nekkid one in the other photo, that may be real and I'm betting her other proportions were slimmed. No way in hell is she that tiny around the waist. She'd fall over, like Barbie.

Not that I mind - I love her more than anything I have ever seen or imagined on earth...but she isn't perfect by any means and KK is most likely even less in that department. I almost wish she were part of "The Fappening" so we could see that mess in its horrific glory.

(35,684 posts)There's a thing called butt implants, just like breast implants.
We go to a restaurant which is frequented by someone who has butt implants. We call her "Bubble Butt" because her butt sticks out like that bubble packing material found in packaging.
As far as whether Kardashian's butt is real or not, of course it is not. There are pics all over the internet of her years ago and comparing the two.
What mystifies me is how anyone could do this without thinking what the difficulties it presents in sitting. There is even a television clip of KK conversing with her mother about what it would be like to sit on butt implants.

I know every decade/era has its 15 minutes of fame celebrities (Eddie the Eagle, Herman Caine, etc...) but over the last decade it seems that 24 hour entertainment/news channels and social media have allowed 15 minutes to become "careers".

(33,688 posts)Atenist monotheism. One of the Pharoah's supernumary titles was "He Who Lives In Truth." Most modern Egyptologists think Akhenaten suffered from Frohlich's Syndrome or Marfan's disease. He was a very weird looking human being and his court sculptors and artists were ordered to exaggerate his, um, odd physical traits and render the royal family, including Nefertiti, in that style.
Eleanors38
(18,318 posts)(in a text) and it indeed has an almost snake-like neck. They took their self I.D. with animals as seriously as naturalism. Her bust would fit right into any number of storefront windows today. That art style was as radical as the monotheism advanced by Akhenaten.
Otherwise, their reign seemed marked by studied incompetence.

(5,402 posts)As a short-ish, self-employed, underpaid, pot-bellied man, my social life is just fine. Certainly GQ-level good looks in regards to the current definition of beauty would help (a little), but men have the privilege to take advantage of our strengths and overcome our weaknesses, even when it comes to looks.
Women have it much-much-much worse than men.
The Kardashian thing is so weird, it must be a fetish of some sort. I look at her, and the opposing signals of synthetic eroticism and body horror makes my skin crawl.
Yavin4
(35,441 posts)Men have to live up to high expectations just like women. Hey, you may have the social confidence, but many men do not. Just like some women have Kim Kardashian's looks, but most women do not.
Saying to a man, "just hey overcome your shyness". Is the same as saying "just lose weight" to a woman. Both are difficult to overcome.
LanternWaste
(37,748 posts)You then believe that both male and female share precisely the same expectations, and precisely the same consequences from our cultural mores?

(35,441 posts)Observation: Kim Kardashian meets/exceeds a certain current cultural female beauty expectation. After meeting this expectation, who does she choose as her mates? Exceptionally highly successful men in the professional athletics and music. Her mates met a cultural expectation, success in highly competitive fields, placed on them.
Experience: In my high school, the boys who played sports were considered dateable by more girls than the boys who did not.
If my 50 years of observations and experiences are not enough data for you, well what do you want from me?
treestar
(82,383 posts)that's the reason for the bad social life, nothing to do with attractiveness. Women are told overcome shyness too. And men ought to be told to lose weight on the same terms as women.
Shyness by definition is going to affect one's social life. I don't get why you think shy women wouldn't have a problem.
betsuni
(25,537 posts)Thank you. American women are expected to be talkative and outgoing, and when they're shy it's a problem. Attractiveness has little to do with the attracting beyond a first glance. I'm shy, the shys know.
Yavin4
(35,441 posts)Societal expectations are that men approach women and initiate a conversation. If a man is inept at doing so, he is ridiculed by both men and women. A shy woman has less pressure on her to overcome her shyness than does a man.
"And men ought to be told to lose weight on the same terms as women. "
Okay, in essence, you agree with me that both sexes have expectations placed on them. Thank you.
treestar
(82,383 posts)To be a shy woman is to be asked out by men in whom you aren't interested and then get their reactions that they feel you had no right to reject since they made the effort. That's a lot worse than being nervous to approach someone you really like.
And as late as the 80s I heard the admonitions about girls not being "too forward." It's like they were telling you your choice in the matter was irrelevant. So even if women approach men, there is still a bit of concern that it will be seen in a negative light.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)when I see people obsessing over what "others got" - be it a six pack, a square jaw or money, and thinking "if only I had that" I know they would still be miserable.
And apparently, they think women should be miserable if they are lacking these things too.
Misery does love company! Self acceptance is key, and moving past juvenile notions about what brings happiness and "if I only had " is the biggest part of it.

Yavin4
(35,441 posts)Fine. Zuckerberg found the true thing. Good for him. I will make my argument one more time. Being a success in life is an expectation placed on men in order to be deemed dateable. Both men and women have expectations that we have to live up to in order to attractive to a mate, and our culture sets absurdly high ones on both sexes.

(31,828 posts)I met my husband five years ago on Halloween. He was dressed as his hobby - harley guy. Told me he was an artist. I was cool with that. Told me he did some commercial work. I was cool with that. Told me he learned HVAC while an Italian Marine - totally cool with that. My father and I had recently had a come to jesus talk about how I was doing the wrong thing and picking the wrong people - that I needed to find somone who swung a hammer, pushed a plow, made his living on stage or with a paint brush. All was cool. We dated for 6 weeks before I found out he had his own company! He also had an HVAC company. My point - I was crazy about him when I thought he was a starving artist that lived paycheck to paycheck know why? He was cool. And I was cool with that. He was nice - and I was very cool with that. That tells me any guy can find someone with or without money. So I'm with ya - no sympathy for someone who is upset that he doesn't have money to procure a woman. Nice guys really DO finish first. And that's that.

Try your best to break out of your shell with women. I know it is probably difficult, but once you start talking, and make friends with a girl, you can date her. Girls want guys they can talk to.
I don't know your age, but woman are shallower when they are young. By 25-30 most women wake up to the idea that going for the good looking rich guy leads to being used.
Just try to make sure you aren't expecting to much of the woman. That is one of the biggest mistakes I see men make. They want the hot girl, and ignore the nice plain girl that they can get.
Good luck out there.

Her face is totally covered in wrinkles, her body is curvy from well-developed muscles without a hint of fat, she doesn't wear a bit of makeup, and she seems totally unaware of her beauty.
