The hatemonger next door

http://www.salon.com/2013/09/29/the_hatemonger_next_door/

“We have to look good,” Spencer said, adding that if his movement means ”being part of something that is crazed or ugly or vicious or just stupid, no one is going to want to be a part of it.” Those stereotypes of “redneck, tattooed, illiterate, no-teeth” people, Spencer said, are blocking his progress. Organizations that monitor domestic hate groups say it’s just this unthreatening approachability that makes Spencer so insidious....

“People have not really grasped that. Even if we shut off all immigration, the country is going to demographically undergo a tremendous transformation,” Spencer said. White people “need to start thinking about a new ethno-state that we would want to be a part of. This is not going to happen in the next election or in the next 10 years probably, but something in the future that would be for our great grandchildren.”

He’s open to founding a such an “ethno-state” in various locations in North America and even on the moon. Until then he’s found a home in this corner of the mountain West, where I grew up. At present, 96 percent of the population in Whitefish’s Flathead County is white.

Under the auspices of his blandly named National Policy Institute, Spencer is working to create an intellectual class of white separatists. The organization’s editorial unit publishes “scientifically-based” books like “Race Differences in Intelligence” and “The Perils of Diversity.” The group rejects the calls for violence, which appear in Internet chat rooms and public campaigns of hate. Spencer prefers a more professorial approach of publishing books and organizing conferences. “Our goal is to form an intellectual community around European nationalism,” he wrote in an email.

1. The white separatist movement has been gaining strength.

Tom Monaghan of Domino's fame is fantasizing about it. There were those nuts that tried to take over a town someplace in the Midwest. One thing about conservatives, they come up with cute names for things. An "intellectual community around European nationalism" really just means 'no n*ggers'. Good luck with your search for "white intellectuals" who will move into your walled city.

2. I am far more concerned with the Spencer model of racist ...

than the robe wearing model, for just the reason stated in the article ... many will find themselves agreeing with what he uses to build to his racial separatist (no, call it what it is ... white supremacist) sale, i.e., "We all just want the same things safety and security for your family, an opportunity to advance in one's chosen vocation, and a little play time/a few toys." It comes much later, that he says this can only be found in racial separation, as those standing in the way of your happiness are PoC. And this works because so many start with the idea that if one doesn't use racial slurs, than one is not a racist ... after all, "that Black guy/woman DID get that job that I should have had! ... It must have been because he/she got some racial preference." Or, "Guilt ridden white people have establish a systemic racial entitlement program for Black folks." I've seen both of these comments on DU, and it both instances, the poster vehemently denies having a racist bone in their body.

4. I agree. The hidden racist can gather strength until they are ready to act. And few will have any

warning it is coming. At least the majority of the people will see the KKK for what it is.

My ancestors (1920s generation) were part of the KKK in NE IA. They went to picnics etc. It was not black people they were against thought. That is kind of a funny story: When another member of my 1960s class in high school and I compared notes after each finding a robe in the attic we found out that our ancestors each joined to fight each other - mine who were protestant and his who were catholic. Note: there were no minorities in the area so the KKK found another difference to exploit - religion. They were making money hand over fist.

What ended this craziness was that in the depression era/WWII era people got to know each other and recognized how stupid it was. People can be talked into anything but even more so when it is hidden and looks innocent.

This story came from my dad about when he was a small boy. The family no longer had any connections to the KKK and in fact he was telling this because my sister was about to become a part of a mixed marriage. We had come a long way. And I am glad we did.

3. So, a different approach, same old racism.

Spencer is going to try the smooth talk method using tricky words with multiple syllables. Like Syrian President Assad fooling Barbara Walters because she viewed Assad as, "very polite, sincere and well educated."
