DES MOINES As the debate heats up once again over raising Iowas gas tax, which hasnt happened in 25 years, youre not likely to hear from a once vocal opponent.
The Republican Party of Iowa wont be entering the fray with a position, said Jeff Kaufmann of Wilton, who was elected party chairman in June.
The state party is not in the business of putting together policy, Kaufmann said. I know former RPIs and RPI chairs have had opinions on that. I will not, which is probably a change.
As recently as January, Kaufmanns predecessor, A.J. Spiker, urged Republicans to kill the gas tax, saying in a fundraising email, Forget Frankensteins Monster ... The gas tax hike seems to be the creature that just wont die!
Wow. The GOP suddenly is not about making policy. Fancy that.

The wholesale tax would begin at 9.5% on April 1, 2015, and gradually increase to 15.5% on Jan. 1, 2018.

(16,296 posts)2. They see falling gas prices as a treasure chest
Gas is $1.10 cheaper than just a few months ago. Who could resist raising some money from that source. Even with a 10% raise in taxes, it's still cheaper. Strange isn't it? Now Obama is giving all those states a pot to dip their finger into with the lower prices at the pump.

Republicans enjoy replacing PROGRESSIVE taxes with REGRESSIVE taxes. And the 1% love them for it!
