In Reagan's 6th year election, the Republicans lost 8 Republican Senate seats

They went from 53 to 45. Nowhere in any coverage this fall, did anyone compare this to the situation this year. If Landrieu loses, as is highly expected, the Democrats will have lost 9 seats - having started at 55 (including Bernie and King) ending at 46. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100th_United_States_Congress

Now, I was quite busy and distracted in 1986 - as a working mom with a gorgeous 1 year old, but somehow I missed the media arguing that this meant the Republicans had to do whatever the Democrats wanted. (Not to mention - rather than "scandals" that disappeared when light was shown on them - Reagan really did illegally sell weapons to Iran and then took the profit to illegally fund right wing thugs in Central America. Not to mention, allowing cocaine to be sold here to raise more money for Contra weapons.)

When things look black - remember that a loss of a similar scale did not halt the Republican agenda.
