"UPDATE 11:38 AM: Mayor Charlie Hales' office also has sent out a statement cheering the chief's decision, saying "the actions taken by these three officers here in Portland" run afoul of conversations on lowering the temperature in the community ahead of the grand jury announcement and ongoing attempts at police reform."

2. Ferguson shooting: Why does it matter to Portlanders?

It didn't matter that Ferguson, Mo., was 2,000 miles away. When Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot unarmed black teenager Mike Brown in August, hundreds of Portlanders protested.

They marched to the Portland Police Bureau's North Precinct. They drew chalk outlines to represent African Americans killed by police.

"Aaron Campbell, James Jahar Perez, Keaton Otis," one protester said. "Everybody here was somebody. They were someone. And now they're gone."

they only killed one person and he was black, but.... he drove into town, shooting out his window at people in town, and then had an accident - warning, don't shoot and drive. He ran into the park hid behind a bridge and started shooting at people in the park. And then the police. I will not call them racist for that kill. Other than that time, I don't think they ever took their guns out again.

I have never been to Portland, have no idea how the police are there.

5. The bright side of Ferguson is the weeding out those who have no business being police officers

The police are not the final arbiters of the law. Their responsibility should be primarily to de-escalate situations, not escalate them. The contempt for the citizens of the community that a lot of police officers have shown is just one of the things boiling over.
