Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDo you have a liberal / left-leaning radio station where you live?
Not one you have to pay for.
We just lost ours in Phoenix to a sports station - because ya know, 5 other sports stations were not enough.

(31,849 posts)Interestingly, the local "Urban Contemporary" station plays hip-hop all day long ... AND, has a 5 day/week, 2 minute spot of rush Limbaugh! Go figure.

(3,370 posts)Unless I am mistaken.
Our major talk radio station is 1210am "The Big Talker" and it's the home of right wing teabaggery. Now and then, they throw a moderate bone, like Smerconish, but that is easily drowned out.
Sometimes, you can tune in Buffalo's 1520 (1510?). I haven't been able to for a looking time, but they used to air Alan Combs.

(1,733 posts)They go broke.
I spent some time working as a radio tech for a station while in college and the following was drilled into us.
Listeners + advertisers + revenue = staying on the air
Stations who can't make the above equation work simply go away. Someone has to rethink the progressive talk format to attract listeners. My favorite three progressive stations in blue blue Oregon went away years ago for just this reason.

It was a nice ride and I really miss it. A lot.

(92 posts)We put a radio station together ourselves featuring:
Thom Hartmann Live
Julianna Forlano Live
Mike Malloy Live
Plus a number of progressive talkers (Nicole Sandler, Sam Seder/Majority Report, Carl Wolfson, Young Turks, and a few of our own): NetrootsRadio.com
And, check out Progressive Voices on TuneIn: http://tunein.com/radio/Progressive-Voices-s189055/
AM Radio is owned by Conservatives. They don't want Progressive to live.
But we do.

(961 posts)Don't know how well it does. Have a feeling WWNC, a sister station that's been in this area since forever, carries them financially.
The on-air personalities are too stupid to be taken seriously by anyone except the most simpleminded, naturally making it of no interest to me.

(448 posts)A Pacifica radio station.

(75,480 posts)talk stations are toning down. Yes, our ears are still crucified with daily Limbaugh, but now they are quietly replacing the rabid RWingers of less importance with neutral shows, like fixing you car, managing your finances, or heart be still, Neil deGrasse Tyson's science and astronomy show.

(28,979 posts)It was Air America for years which was awesome. Stephanie Miller! Ed Schultz, Thom Hartman...then they pulled the road out from under me as I was driving to work one morning. Sold the programs to another station so they could be a sport's staion. For awhile the new station played Stephanie and then they replaced her with that Herman Cain guy who reminds me of the chef on South Park. And worse, they put Dennis Miller on in the afternoon to torture me. Mid-day is the only bright spot as they air a Native American show hosted by a local tribal leader's son. It's actually interesting and liberal. But I have had my fill of being stuck hearing the other two, so I had to go to an all-Spanish mariachi station where I have no clue what's being said. Is there any niche I fill that radio stations care to appeal to anymore?
