Republicans winning House and Senate is price to pay for progress.

When the Civil Rights Act was passed in the 60's, that was the most progressive legislation since the New Deal. LBJ said it meant the Democratic Party had lost the South for a generation. But the Party had a big enough advantage to survive such a loss.

Now, as Democrats celebrate the passage of the ACA and social progress, such as gay marriage, we see the Republicans making huge gains in the House and Senate. The price of progress seems to be to the political benefit of the GOP and to the detriment of the Democratic Party.

But is this a generational change for the GOP? Will the Democrats recover from this small episode of progress? Or will the Republicans hold their gains for a generation, as they have done in the South? It does seem there is a price to pay for progress.

Are the Democrats paying now for electing the first black President?? It seems the voters punish the Democrats when they try to pass any progressive legislation, however slight it might be?
