The picture on the left is making the rounds and people are freaking out about it. The one on the right is the real photo (which I found doing a quick google search).
You'd think people could see and realize the first one is a bad photoshop, but you'd be mistaken. I guess believe what they want to believe.

(53,866 posts)its easier to think that black people are responsible for their own oppression rather than admit to the role the rest of us play in it.

(87 posts)Yes, the "logic" that (suspected) shoplifters should be shot down in the street (especially if they are black) - this is all they can glean from the situation. Amazing indeed.

(3,248 posts)The FBF whose posting I saw seemed to think that "those people" expect to be able to rob stores with impunity.
When I posted the un-retouched photo in her comment section, she just noted that that was "even better" with eye-rollers.

(42,759 posts)That would be the only explanation why some idiot would go to
the trouble it would require to make that kind of a Photoshop.
Probably had Limbaugh or Faux playing in the background while
they were working on it.

(13,598 posts)The script looks a pretty good match, although having been told that it's a photoshop the fact that it gets narrower is suspicious.
What gives away that it's a photoshop?

(12,471 posts)And that one is one.
You can see in the last two lines of text, it is not completely whited out. There is a pattern on the lower right side of the sign that repeats. The R, S, and T are not consistent with the other R, S, and T in the upper part of the sign.
When you look at a lot of this stuff, it's not that hard to peg a bad one.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)The 'R' in the bottom is copied/pasted from the 'R' in "HER", the 'S' in the bottom is copied/pasted from the 'S' in "SHOULD" (Used in both "ROBS" and "STORE" , and the 'T' in the bottom is copied/pasted from the 'T' in "TIME".
Also, the graininess of the photo is a great giveaway.

(3,581 posts)The smeary blobs in the white space on both sides of robs a store are artifacts from the original phrase being erased... by an amateur who didn't know what he was doing.
Yeah, the letters match the handwriting elsewhere in the sign
because apart from the B they are pulled from elsewhere in the sign. The R is from the word her. Exact match. The O is from should. Exact match.
And, yes
. It is nonsensical.

(37,161 posts)Compare the "S"s in "ROBS" and "STORE" to the "S" in "SHOULD", vs compared to other "S"s on the poster.
Likewise, compare the "R"s in "ROBS" and "STORE" to the one in "HER", vs. compared to other "R"s on the poster.
The actual shape of the letters varies in the natural (original) writing, but is identical to particular letters in the altered section.
They've been obviously copied and pasted, and everything else shows the same obvious signs, with very little "adjustment".
Donald Ian Rankin
(13,598 posts)Yes, when I look closely, I can see that.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,182 posts)First, you look at the content of the sign. If it sounds outrageously crazy, then you go to step two, and look for manipulations. Look to see if it appears certain letters are written exactly the same. Look to the spacing and the positioning of the words.
Here, it's pretty obvious given that the last two lines of text in the manipulated sign are far narrower than the rest of the lines, for no particular reason.
Donald Ian Rankin
(13,598 posts)It's easier to write a slogan onto a sign than to photoshop it.
What does, arguably, make this one suspicious is that it's a slogan more likely to have been written by a white man, on a sign being held up by a black one. But there are 350,000,000 people in the USA, including several million black right-wingers.
Pacifist Patriot
(24,653 posts)1. The slogan is racist tripe bringing it's legitimacy into question, so that made me look closely at the words that made it such.
2. A sign maker would likely remain consistent with margins. There seems to be no particular reason why the writer would suddenly leave margin space on the bottom two lines rather than fit all of the words onto one line.
3. So where did the writing for those lines come from? Many of the letters are direct copy and paste of the same letter as it appears previously on the sign. People have consistent handwriting in general, but not that technically consistent within a single document.
It's just a matter of having a "huh?" moment and refocusing attention to details. Some people do that inately, some people have to train themselves, some people see it when pointed out to them, and some just never develop that ability....i.e. willful ignorance because it fits their frame.
