Couldn't put as much of the quote in the title as I would have liked.
Tim Wise on Facebook:
I cannot recall the last time a white cop killed a black man and white folks didn't rush to rationalize it, justify it, or defect the conversation. In fact, I can't remember one example where a clear majority of whites allowed themselves to even get angry about such an incident. And white conservatives, who always scream about the heavy hand of "big government?" Apparently they just mean the tax man, not the cops. They think a 39 percent top marginal tax rate is tyranny, but killing unarmed black men is not; capital gains taxes and business regulations are proof of fascism but chokeholds and stop-and-frisk are the price to pay for "safety." Fascinating.

(14,691 posts)attended protests against the NYPD cop sodomizing Abner Louima with a broomstick in the '90s and the shooting of Amadou Diallo who was holding a wallet the cops thought was a gun when they shot him. At the time I was definitely the minority in attendance but I believe it's important to try to show we're not all racist jackasses. I'm gratified to see so many young caucasians in the streets regarding Ferguson and now Garner. We obviously have a long way to go. Any notion that this is a "post-racial" country is sweeping a whole lot of dirt under the rug.

(22,336 posts)It doesn't mean all white people do it. Tim Wise is white. But the people doing it are white, and it isn't just a few.
