Charles Barkley's Ferguson comments shortsighted, fellow NBA announcer Kenny Smith says

Was Charles Barkley right when he called Ferguson protestors 'scumbags?'

No, fellow NBA veteran and sports announcer Kenny Smith said, adding that Barkley's comments show a lack of understanding for many in the black community.

Barkley, an Alabama native and Auburn graduate, has drawn considerable attention for comments he made this week following rioting in Ferguson, Missouri. Hundreds of people had taken to the streets following the announcement a grand jury wouldn't indict white police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting death of Michael Brown, who is black.

The protests turned violent, with stores being looted and buildings burned. When asked about the incidents, Barkley said the rioters weren't "real black people" and described them as "scumbags."

"We have to be really careful with the cops, because if it wasn't for the cops we would be living in the wild, wild west in our neighborhoods," Barkley added.
