Even when in the name of "national security" or patriotism, murder is murder and must be punished.
PS: And toss in Cheney, Poppy, and the rest of the warmongers. No need to dig up any of them who've gone to their "reward."

I knew Cheney was the real President behind the scenes - when I first saw the two fellows togheter.... Bush was a stooge - And he know it - but had fun being the President - and was way to happy letting Cheney do the dirty job he could care less for...

(6,960 posts)Unfortunately, even Pres. Obama has bought into this notion of 'American exceptionalism' that permits our 'leaders' to see themselves, their policies, and their actions as mystically immune from justice.

(55,745 posts)Legal experts and human rights advocates says prosecutions must follow Senate's report on CIA torture as president says grave violations of domestic and international law should be kept "where they belongin the past"

Common Dreams, Dec. 10, 2014
In his first official remarks following Tuesday's release of the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on the torture program conducted by the CIA during the presidency of George W. Bush, President Barack Obama on Tuesday night indicated that the abuses detailed in the report conducted in the name of the American peopledescribed as "horrific," "ruthless" and "much more brutal than previously thought"should not be followed by further inquiries or prosecutions as many have long urged.
In his remarks, Obama acknowledged that "no nation is perfect," but argued that "one of the strengths that makes America exceptional is our willingness to openly confront our past, face our imperfections, make changes and do better."
Backed by his interpretation of "American Exceptionalism," Obama suggested that the release of the reportwhich his administration fought tirelessly to restrictwas all that was necessary in order for the nation to move forward.
"Rather than another reason to refight old arguments," Obama continued, "I hope that todays report can help us leave these techniques where they belongin the past."
Legal experts and human rights advocates, however, have taken a decidedly different approach to the report as many renewed a simple message in the wake of Tuesday's release, saying: If gross crimes were committed, prosecutors should be assigned and the criminals should be tried and punished.

You know what would demonstrate "exceptional"? America prosecuting traitors, warmongers and banksters who made a killing off war.

Unbelievable.
So Pres. Obama's reasoning on not prosecuting torturers is: "We won't do it again. We promise."
Oh, and more of what amounts to 'government privilege' ... those at the top have to take care of their own.
This episode is turning into a very, very low point for the Obama presidency.

And what ... he's indicted more than 30 years after taking power and committing the preponderance of the crimes (aside from the financial ones) against the country's own citizens :

Let's not hyperbolize the courage and efficacy of Chilean justice.

(1,151 posts)They will indict W and Dick and all, after they have been dead for 30 years. At least they would be an admission of guilt.

(75,480 posts)said they should be prosecuted. That would be Stephanie Miller the radio host. Her dad was an assistant prosecutor.
I would settle for putting Dick Cheney on the docket. It would have he result of bringing out all the truth of how the Bush Administration operated and whose palms they were greasing with our tax money. It would serve as an example to any future administrations of what could happen when they behave as criminals.
We could offer the rest of them pardons, Dubya, Condi, Rummy etc. providing they would be willing to divest themselves of their fortunes to be put in a trust fund for recompense to the middle eastern families whose lives they have destroyed and killed. Or they too can be put on trial for war crimes.
Someone has to go to the gallows.

(7,947 posts)The US built and maintains whatever it is that makes up the international system. The US Government doesn't answer to anyone else. The US is good with that, because, obviously, it can do whatever it wants. The rest of the developed world is good with it, because the money that would go to their militaries can be spent on their social programs instead.
Nothing will happen. Accept it now, it'll save on needlessly wasted energy later.

There was absolutely no excuse whatsoever for kidnapping and terrorizing those people.
Pure Medieval sadistic joy is the only reason I can think of for them to do that.
That still makes them all hideous monsters who have forfeited their right to live among us.
