Dear God, MSNBC is nothing but one prolonged Rubio-gasm this morning.
They are saying that even if he turns down a VP offer, he will help Romney with Latinos, although the current guest just said the opposite...that Rubio is "green" like Palin was "green," that he would be a liability, not an asset.

(1,560 posts)that Rubio as a Cuban-American wouldn't automatically bring in the votes of non-Cuban Hispanics out West.

(3,073 posts)He is NOT the son of Cuban parents who escaped to America- he's the son of Cubans that immigrated to the US before Castro- and actually tried to move back to Cuba. I'm sure if he becomes the candidate, that this will be back in the media again as it should be.

(31,849 posts)Let's see ... picking Rubio in order to be more attractive to the Hispanic electorate, shows how tone deaf the teaparty/gop really is.
Cuban-Americans make up approximately 3.5% of the U.S. Hispanic population, compare that to the 66% of Mexican origin.
Any conversation with any immigrant group of Hispanic origin will quickly reveal that Cubans do not share many common interests with the other Hispanic immigrant groups. In fact, here in the southwest (Arizona), there appears to by a measure of animus between the two groups.
So, IMHO, picking Rubio will help the teaparty/gop with the Hispanic electorate about as much as picking Sowell or Thomas would help the teaparty/gop gain favor with the African-American electorate.
And that's to say, not much.

(82,849 posts)Party pooh-bahs who never spare a second thought (or usually even a first one) for women or minorities suddenly decide, "Hey, one of those people is just as good as another!" and we get astroturf PUMAs (alleged Democrats, disappointed that Hilary Clinton didn't win the nomination, who were going to vote for McCain-Palin). What might 2012 spawn as Republicans scramble to pander to the Latino vote that prior to this month they didn't give a tin shit about?

(31,706 posts)That little tidbit was dropped over the weekend. Yep, Mario, the great Hispanic "white hope" doesn't speak Spanish. Besides the fact that he's Cuban (Mexicans...who are the largest Hispanic group...aren't too hot about Cubans...especially from someone who "immigrated" before 1959). It'll be a hoot to see Mario go into the bario with an interpreter...
