"Elected officials used this man as a scapegoat to heal our community," she said in a telephone interview with the Los Angeles Times. "Our community was never broken."

Mahany, who had supported Lee during the political furor over his department’s investigation, called the resignation a "terrible tragedy." She said she blamed civil rights activists whose protests "ruined the reputation and career of a really stellar law enforcement officer."

Lee "is nothing but a scapegoat," Mahany said. "Our police department did nothing wrong."

Cop's Son Accused Of Beating Man Walks Out Of Jail

SANFORD, Fla. —

The son of a Sanford police lieutenant, who is accused of beating up a homeless man, walked out of jail late Monday afternoon. On the same day, former Sanford Police Chief Brian Tooley retired, according to city officials.

Justin Collison, 21, turned himself in to the Seminole County jail at 8:01 Monday morning. He was booked into the jail on aggravated battery charges and posted a $4,000 bond. Collison walked out of the jail with his attorney and brother at around 4:30pm.

Collison could face as much as five years in jail, in a case that has had an impact throughout the Sanford Police Department and across the city itself.

5. Do you really mean to call an entire city stupid and racist?

Out of curiosity, would you appreciate being called a racist for the actions of somebody else who you've never met and had absolutely no power over? I doubt it.

6. I did not say every single person there is racist and stupid. But the community as a whole is.

And if I lived there I would be ashamed and horrified about my community. And yes I would feel it deserved those negative descriptors.

8. The community *is* the people who live there.

I for one live in a town that is in very large percentage stupid, racist, and knuckledragging. That doesn't mean that I would find it okay to effectively say that everyone who lives here is responsible for those attitudes.

For everyone to try and save face while maintaining status quo. Too bad these rednecks are dumb and made themselves just look worse.
