Soldiers Relocate Wedding to Accommodate Obama's Golf Game

Natalie Heimel and her fiancé, Edward Mallue Jr., a pair of captains in the Army, were walking from their wedding rehearsal on Saturday at the 16th tee box at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Hawaii when they were informed they'd have to move their wedding, scheduled for the next day.

President Barack Obama wanted to play through.

It was the second time that day that the couple heard from the nation's commander in chief, whose affinity for golf has, at times, caused political headaches for the White House. Stationed in Hawaii and knowing the president spends his Christmas holiday on the islands, they invited him to their ceremony on a lark. They had received a letter earlier on Saturday saying Obama regretted he couldn't come and wishing them happiness on their wedding day.

“He apologized and congratulated them.”
Jamie McCarthy

“It was kind of ironic they got the letter from them and then, within hours, they were told they had to be moved due to him,” Jamie McCarthy, Mallue's sister, said in an interview. “It was emotional, especially for her—she’s the bride and in less than 24 hours they had to change everything they had planned.”

The golf course, located on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, is a regular stop for Obama when he's in the state, with the Ko’olau Mountains framing the front nine and majestic views of Pacific coastline spanning the back nine. It's also a favorite spot for Mallue, a golfing enthusiast.

Still, anyone planning an event at the course when the president may be in town is warned about the potential for last-minute shuffling, said Naile Brennan, manager of K Bay Catering, which was handling logistics for the wedding. Brennan said they had other sites ready to go, and the couple ended up choosing the lush, green lawn near the home of Colonel Eric Schaefer, the commanding officer of the base, which offers an elevated view near the 16th hole.

Knowing exactly 'when the President may be in town' is probably not going to happen until after plans have been made.

by attending their wedding?

I can't believe his office would be so tone-deaf that they would delibeartely create heartache for someone who had invited them to their wedding at the very venue they intended to reserve for the president. If so, someone in his office made a big blunder and the President should make it right for this couple.

doesn't seem like the sort of man who would knowingly have choosen to do that. The wedding already took place, so I was wrong about a possible surprise showing at their wedding, but I still think he will do something nice for them instead.

ETA end of article says he didn't know and had personally called the couple to apologize and congratulate them. Nice and classy! They loved the call.

I would play my round of golf somewhere else. I'm sure there is a golf course somewhere in Hawaii where nobody is getting married.

For one, he probably never even saw the invitation to the wedding. Somebody else reads most of his mail, and also does his scheduling. When he decided to play golf, the golf course did not bother to tell him - "somebody else is using the 16th hole for their wedding." It was the BUSINESS which sort of automatically treated the President like a king, and the other people, even people paying thousands of dollars, like peons.

Heck, I work for a community center - a government building, owned, presumably by the public. if the Governor, or the local base commander, or even the City Council (twice a year they have an event for the new foreign military officers) is going to be using our facility I would work a 12 hour day rolling out the red carpet. Putting fresh wax on the entryway, making sure everything is as clean and neat as we can get it. Because, God forbid a general see some leaves on the sidewalk or something.

We have wedding receptions there almost every weekend, and while we try to make sure they have a great event, they do NOT get the same VIP treatment.

But it's pretty sad when a couple hears from the President "I can NOT come to the wedding" and then hears that he played golf instead.

Somewhere, Obama's staff should have gotten better instructions.
