Medicare to Save $200 Billion Through 2016

Thanks to Randi Rhodes for alerting us to this story that I'm sure the corporate media is trying to keep quiet.

Keep this in your quiver of comebacks to Repubs when they say anything about Obama the big spender and how awful Obamacare is.

Medicare Report: Medicare to Save $200 Billion Through 2016

By Maggie Fox

April 23, 2012 | 9:19 a.m.

Medicare is set to save $200 billion by 2016, according to a report released by the actuary for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Monday.
The Obama administration has highlighted the positive aspects of the report ahead of a separate report from the Medicare Trustees, due out later Monday, that's due to project when Medicare will go bankrupt.
"According to estimates from the CMS Office of the Actuary, the over $200 billion in short-term savings to the Medicare program come from ending excessive payments to private insurers who offer Medicare Advantage plans, implementing antifraud measures, and changing provider payment policies to reflect improvements in productivity," the Health and Human Services Department said in a statement.

"In addition, according to the HHS assistant secretary for planning and evaluation, seniors and people with disabilities in traditional Medicare will see lower cost-sharing and premiums as a result of the Affordable Care Act, totaling $59.4 billion through 2016 and $208 billion through 2021."

of the words "Medicare Advantage plans". Tell me, why is it we're supposed to dislike this? A sizable number of seniors seem to want it.

According to Thom Hartmann Med Adv was a GOP plan to get the private health insurance companies a foot in the door of Medicare so they can gradually take it over while the GOP gradually chips away at Medicare more and more.

The Tea Party Propaganda is that Obamacare cuts $500 billion out of Medicare scaring the bejebus out of seniors. Lots of that is this $200 billion to control Med Advantage. private companies excesses.

my Medicare GAP plan with MVP in Rochester, NY went from about $40/month to-- ready for this?? ZERO!
I kid you not..maybe 5-6 months ago.. I called MVP, assuming there was a catch.. NOT!.
Some co-pays went up slightly. $5 here and there. MVP is a not-for profit Company. It seems that the better the company is, the more $$ the gov will give it. I assume they figured this out and were able to drop the premiums..

$40 a month is not a problem for me but I'm sure it is for lost of people. so...MVP seems to be one of the 'good guys..'
Never thought I'd say that about an insurance company.
