1. One aspect they missed was something I've found from white America

across Europe, in India, and even in some circles in China, the economic part of the preference.

In all those areas, having a pale wife meant you were wealthy enough that she could sit indoors, presumably spending her life in ladylike pursuits like all varieties of needlework, instead of venturing out in sun and becoming tanned as she gardened, took care of animals, and went to market day. A man with a pale wife was thought to have servants to do all the coarse work, keeping his wife as porcelain as possible.

One of the posters was correct about the unhealthy pallor going out of vogue among Europeans as being wealthy enough to winter in the tropics became more of a statement than being white as a sheet in the summer was.

However, minus the endless quoting, the discussion was interesting as far as it went.
