Did anyone else see this? They (the media) blamed the death of a college student visiting Denver, during their medical marijuana only phase, on marijuana-laced cookies. 60 Minutes just mentioned it without any other comment other than that marijuana intoxication caused his death.
Remember the old propaganda PSAs about pot making you jump off buildings? Reefer Madness?
60 Minutes, for some reason tonight, has decided to propel this propaganda into the 21st century push for legalization. And, what else would we expect?

(26,624 posts)but, here in Colorado, we have often heard of the college kid who jumped to his death. No word on any other reason except pot, but call me a cockeyed skeptic, I'm willing to guess, due to the lack of any litigation or charges from the pot hating authorities, there's way more to the story.

There is always more to these stories than a hysterical antidrug press admits to.

I can't comment on the 60 minutes piece because I'm not at able to listen to sound at the moment (SO is studying on the couch next to me), but I live in Denver and remember the story well.
1) This did NOT happen before recreational sales. It happened in March 2014, three months after recreational pot went legal.
2) The man ate a single pot cookie that contained 6-1/2 doses.
3) The store told him to cut the cookie into 6 pieces and only eat one at a time. He ate one piece and then told his friends he didn't feel anything, so ate all the rest of the cookie.
4) He started freaking out, but his friends calmed him down. Then he went to sleep but woke agitated and incoherent many times during the night, including once when he started smashing furniture.
5) At some point in the morning, he ran from his upper-floor hotel room and fell over a rail in the hallway, into the lobby below.
6) "The media" did not blame his death on pot. The coroner's report did, just as it also came back negative for alcohol or other drugs. The coroner ruled his death due to marijuana intoxication. Not "the media."
I am an avowed pothead, but FFS, to think it's impossible for someone to have a bad reaction to a drug is naive, especially with the high grade shit we have out here. I mean, some people die from eating peanuts, gluten, and shellfish, though the vast majority of people can ingest them without any problem. It's not impossible that someone could have a really bad reaction to pot.

(111,277 posts)Edibles have to be approached with a lot of caution. They come on slow and last for a very, very long time.
I went through the 60s and even I wouldn't touch the commercial edibles, although I've been known to use the leaf itself in pot cuisine once I'd assessed its strength through smoking a joint.
As time goes on, edibles will be a lot more formally packaged with specific instructions about how much and how often, especially with cautions about how long it takes to feel anything and how long the duration is.

(28,477 posts)Santa gave me some cookies in my stocking this year. I ate half a cookie and felt a light, pleasant buzz. The next day I ate the other half and was blasted outta my mind. A week later, another half brought me somewhere in the middle. It was weird and makes me want to stick with smoking until they figure out how to make the high more consistent.
