I am glad they spoke up and continued to increase the awareness of the issues affecting our country.

Common talked about how participating in the film (Selma) raised his awareness and, in his words, humanity. He met true veterans of the civil rights era, the 1950s-60s.

His acceptance speech was beautiful and moving.
