"a sensation of coldness resulting from a cold or damp environment, or from a sudden emotional reaction"

Sometimes accompanied by gooseflesh. (Goosebumps)

It can be a fear response, but it can also be hopeful or optimistic.

It's a tradition to have someone sing it as part of the cadre of midnight songs in Times Square. Cee-Lo (don't get me started) Green did it and the "and no religion too" part was changed. I was SO relieved this year when it went back to what it intended to say.

but didn't see this!

I'm a dual national (French/American) and I can't tell you how proud I am of my fellow French citizens--men, women, and children, old and young, all races, all religions, all political persuasions. THEY CAME OUT TO DEFEND THEIR BELOVED "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE". VIVE LA FRANCE ! VIVE LA REPUBLIQUE !

Think about it. Can you "IMAGINE" an comparable American demonstration applauding and singing along to the Marseillaise, for example?

....when John Lennon was murdered. At the time I lived 9 blocks north of the Dakota on CPW. There were vigils outside his building (I didn't go to any) and they announced there would be a "memorial gathering" at the band shell in Central Park.

When I got down there, I saw thousands of people standing there unbelievably quiet. On the stage of the band shell was a single chair with a boombox and a photograph of John Lennon. After a few minutes someone started the tape, it was "Imagine". It was something I'll never forget.

A world with no fighting, no insane secret societies who undermine community and human spirit
A world led by compassion, wisdom, individual and social balance
A world organized by people of sanity and generosity
A world of encouragement of positive creativity
A world of kindness, gentleness, respect for all
A world of goodness, calm and happiness
A world of free spirit tempered by a healthy sense of responsibility
A world of love, care and joy

In Paris they used it to come together after their heinous attack.

In the U.S., Clear Channel banned it from being played on their stations after 9-11.

Once again the French show they are just a bunch of surrendering pansies.

I don't agree but then I liked quite a few of the songs that got on that worst songs list.

A six hundred plus post thread doesn't happen very often there, people have strong opinions about music and they are all over the place.

This one's been giving me chills lately:

A hit for weeks in 1970 in Europe, Canada, Australia and the US , inspired by Woodstock, the event that propelled the artist from being an unknown to becoming a star.

Edit to add: I had a Senior Moment. Also: The Edwin Hawkins Singers gave the cut its own urgency and depth.

We were so close, there was no room
We bled inside each others wounds
We all had caught the same disease
And we all sang the songs of peace

So accurately describes the feeling of being in a crowd, full of the wounds from war, knowing all the people pressing around you share the pain...but also the hope.

It was such a sad, angry time, but this song was a comfort.

Knowing the words to the song makes it pretty obvious.

I think Lennon would be pleased to have that song be his legacy.
