Saudi Cleric Says Building Snowmen is “Un-Islamic” (It Leads To Eroticism) LOLZ

NOT THE ONION. If ever a thread title was ripe for satirical cartoons….

Found this in LBN.

Saudi Cleric Says Building Snowmen is “Un-Islamic”

Source: Al-Akhbar

A prominent Saudi cleric whipped up controversy by issuing a religious ruling forbidding the building of snowmen, describing them as un-Islamic.

Asked on a religious website if it was permissible for fathers to build snowmen for their children after a snowstorm in the country's north, Sheikh Mohammed Saleh al-Munajjid replied: "It is not permitted to make a statue out of snow, even by way of play and fun."

Snow has covered upland areas of Tabuk province near Saudi Arabia's border with Jordan for the third consecutive year as cold weather swept across the Middle East.

Quoting Muslim scholars, Munajjid argued that to build a snowman was to create an image of a human being, an action considered sinful under the kingdom's medieval interpretation of Sharia.

The sheikh’s comments provoked swift responses from Twitter users writing in Arabic and identifying themselves with Arab names.

Munajjid had some supporters, however. "It (building snowmen) is imitating the infidels, it promotes lustiness and eroticism," one wrote.

Stoning to death? Beheading? Chopping hands off?

How can anyone that stupid command any respect from a thinking person? Fear?

Why is that? Almost to the point of being a sickness, or an aberration of the norm.

so I guess his fatwas are not binding in Saudi Arabia, outside of his personal followers. According to Wikipedia, he issued a few other remarkable decisions and opinions:

Munajjid holds the view that mice are "one of Satan's soldiers" and makes everything it touches impure; and that depictions of the creature in cartoons such as Tom and Jerry, and Disney's Mickey Mouse, had taught children that it was in fact loveable.[8] Although he was quoted as saying that Mickey Mouse should be killed,[9] he later qualified his statement stating: “What I said was not a fatwa for Mickey Mouse to be killed, no rational person would say such a thing....The true subject being discussed was harmful rodents and mice, not Mickey.”[10] Munajjid condemned the Beijing Olympics as the "bikini Olympics", claiming that nothing made Satan happier than seeing female athletes dressed in skimpy outfits. ...

Haven't they learned the lesson from what Allah wreaked upon the coast of Asia, during the celebration of these forbidden? At the height of immorality, Allah took vengeance on these criminals. "Those celebrating spent what they call 'New Year's Eve' in vacation resorts, pubs, and hotels. Allah struck them with an earthquake. He finished off the Richter scale. All nine levels gone. Tens of thousands dead.

Saudi blogger receives first 50 lashes of sentence for 'insulting Islam'.

A Saudi blogger convicted of insulting Islam was brought after Friday prayers to a public square in the port city of Jeddah and flogged 50 times before hundreds of spectators, a witness to the lashing said.

The witness said Raif Badawi’s feet and hands were shackled during the flogging but his face was visible. He remained silent and did not cry out, said the witness, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity fearing government reprisal.

Badawi was sentenced last May to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes. He had criticized Saudi Arabia’s powerful clerics on a liberal blog he founded. The blog has since been shut down. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 1m riyals or about $266,600.
