Growing up in Germany, I was taught that you cannot separate the Wehrmacht from the Nazi regime.

Or rather, that it is inappropriate to highlight the suffering of German soldiers without considering the broader context.

That is essentially why there is no equivalent to Memorial Day in Germany: Such a day would, rightfully, be considered offensive to the victims of Nazi Germany.

Specifically due to the war in Afghanistan. The problem remains though: What should Jewish, and other, groups think about it? If they aren't being commemorated as well then it is problematic.

It's not a big holiday, it's more of a "private" tradition of the german army.
