Edited to add - when we were young and my parents were poor, we just went barefoot all summer. We each got two new pairs of shoes a year - serviceable, plain ones for the start of school, and dress up shoes for Easter. Those two pairs had to last all year so when we out outside to play in the swamp with the alligators (for real - we lived next to a swamp), we went barefoot.

But the only time Mom put a breadbag on a foot was when my sister cut her foot on a piece of glass and the breadbag was to keep blood off the car.
