Source: Raw Story
Fox News host Steve Doocy complained on Wednesday that President Barack Obamas plan to make college tuition free for some students was not fair because he had just paid off his student loans about two weeks ago.
In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, the president talked about his plan to to spread that idea all across America, so that two years of college becomes as free and universal in America as high school is today. The $60 billion dollar proposal would provide grants to pay 75 percent of the average cost of community college for two years, and participating states would be required to cover the rest.
I want to work with this Congress, to make sure Americans already burdened with student loans can reduce their monthly payments, so that student debt doesnt derail anyones dreams, Obama explained on Tuesday.
But Doocy reacted on Wednesday by suggesting that every student should be saddled with debt because he was.

(14,255 posts)But, the thought of applying that money to the actual mortgages? The thought of canceling onerous student loan and credit card amd medical debt? Oh noes! Why should anyone get rewarded for bad behavior, I paid MY loans off, etc. This keeps us from moving forward. The 1% know this quite well. We will accept bailing out the 1%, but not our next door neighbor.

(24,568 posts)when two store clerks were talking about raising minimum wage. One said: "It's not fair; I had to work 2 years to get what they want to pay somebody just starting out." The other clerk tried to tell her they would ALL get a raise if minimum wage was increased, but she just kept saying "it's not fair." Divisive, indeed.

(53,342 posts)He was given gobs of money to pay for tuition so he was able to go to college.
He then paid it off after attaining gainful (well...I'm being quite generous here) employment.
Other than some minor add'l funds for interest, how is this different from someone going to college w/o having to use loans?
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,719 posts)they are more likely to go to and finish college, which means they have a better chance at a good job, which means they might be able to contribute more to society, including as taxpayers. If they aren't buried in student loans they are better able to buy houses and cars and get married and have families and start businesses instead of living in their parents' basements until they're 40. Isn't it a good thing to have more people who have good jobs and can buy things and pay taxes and don't have to rely on other taxpayers for their survival? Isn't that what GOPers want - more "makers" and fewer "takers"? I don't understand how anyone could possibly object to supporting public education.

(115,719 posts)And Steve Douchey should get his money back, because obviously a college education didn't help him much. Fortuantely most people aren't as stupid as he is, and would benefit.

(37,160 posts)Doocy went to college in the mid-1970s (Univ. Kansas at Lawrence), when state schools were cheap, especially compared to today. On short notice I can only dig up some people's comments about a 2011 tuition hike proposal, but there a person mentions that tuition in 1975 was $250.
His annual salary at FOX is something like a half-million a year.
If he didn't pay it off decades ago:
1) he's been abusing the deferment system so badly we can retire the term "welfare queen" and replace it with "a doocy"; and
2) He's really bad at finances. Really, really bad. "Brains of birdseed" bad.
Don't use yourself as an example, Stevie. The whole reason Rupert and Roger have you on the air is because you're such a dumbass.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,719 posts)But I think he's probably lying. He could easily have paid off a mid-'70s loan for a state university many years ago, and almost certainly did. Unless he's even more stupid than he looks, which is very stupid indeed.
